| [Vista] Windows Update - mysterious unusual items
New Vostro 1700 with Vista Home Premium.
I see a couple of unusual items that Windows Update wants to install.
• Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) - unusual because this computer has Office 2007 Professional and has never had Office 2003 on it.
• 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1) - Important, Published 12/11/2007 - unusual because in my Windows Update>Update History, "2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1) - Status: Successful, Type:Important, Date installed: 5/6/2008" is already installed
Why does WU want to install an SP for software I don't have and install another SP that has already been installed? -- YOU can help reduce poverty, sustainably. »www.kiva.org/lender/kenandart

| It got confused? Maybe there is some other software that has dependency on Office 2003 (Works?)
otherwise, just hide the updates.

| reply to koam Do the Hotfixes.
They relate to two items that do effect you:
1. The possibility of exploits based on some unique features of the files generated from early versions of Office. These hotfixes prevent a possible security threat if you receive files created from previous Office versions;
2. There very likely are "Viewers" installed to handle file formats and versioning differences from other Office Applications or Versions. The Hotfix is designed to make security hotfixes to these Viewers.
Windows Update is correct in what it wants to do. I agree with you it is very unclear as to the "Why" of it all.

| reply to koam If you're getting Office updates you have Microsoft Update, which is a successor to Windows Update. You would have had to elect to install it at some point, however. -- "Windows is for boys, Linux is for men, OSX is for adolescents." Attributed |

| reply to koam Microsoft Update is not a successor to Windows Update. It is just a different service.
But in this case you are sadly mistaken. The updates can come from Windows Update because they are security and not functional Hotfixes. Both Update services would push out security related Hotfixes. |

| There are "Viewer" Components for backwards compatability for previous versions of Office included with Office 2007. Please see my original reply. It does answer your question.
The Updates offered are right and proper, and you should install them. They are security updates, and their proffer is correct. |

| You're right that it is Windows Update and that I did give it permission to update other apps.
I plan to install them, I still don't understand why it wants to reinstall a successfully installed SP for 2007 (163.0 MB) »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en
and why it wants "SP3" for a suite that I don't have....my thinking is that an SP is a big update for a suite I don't have. Here's the info on SP3 »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en though the download size in WU is only 6.1 MB. |

| reply to koam I understand the seeming mystery, but the proffered SP3 is correct.
Think of it this way. You have identified a very serious vulnerability in the file format you used for years in a widely sold product. The product has been updated several times, and for backwards compatability, you allow the newer versions to seamlessly read and write to the older file formats.
For some security vulnerabilities, you can issue a single new DLL replacement; or a new shim to patch the vulnerability. In some cases you do not have this luxery; so you rethink all of the security and other Hotfixes you have applied to your six-year-old product, and create an integrated repair that comprehensively rebuilds these underpinnings so that they are as secure, and also efficient as possible.
The first method of issuing repairs reflects the ordinary Hotfix. The more comprehensive second method Microsoft calls a Service Pack.
If you decide against the Service Pack and hide it, chances are the sky will not fall. But if I were you I would install it.
It will identify the Office 2007 commanalities, and upgrade only those aspects of your system.
