Re: [Vista] Vista shared files on a xp puter

I have found when networking xp and vista that you it is so much easier if you change the workgroup name to be the same. By default workgroup name in xp is MSHOME and in vista it is workgroup. When I changed them to be the same sharing files was a breeze.

I agree, though Vista should still discover other shares on another workgroup as long as it's within the same subnet.

Hmmm...I wonder if that is why Vista sees my XP machines easily (doesn't see the 98SE one though) but XP cannot see the Vista machine but sees the other XP machines? I noticed that it was Workgroup in Vista and MSHome in XP of course. I tried clicking on Workgroup in XP a little while ago and crashed everything. I'll never touch Workgroup again in XP. How do you change Vista to MSHome?

Control Panel, System and Maintenance, System.

In the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings section of the System window, click Change settings.

On the Computer Name tab of the System Properties dialog box, click Change.

In the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, type the name of the workgroup being used by the other computers on your network in the same Workgroup, and then click OK.
