Event ID 9 - RAID Controller Issue

Windows XP Home SP2
Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4 Motherboard
E8400 @ 3.6GHz
2GB RAM
6 HDDs

I have 5 Seagate SATA drives in my system, none of them in RAID configurations. All are connected to the main SATA controller. There is a second SATA controller that deals with the last two SATA ports, both unoccupied.

Last night while watching a movie I had the video freeze up three times and audio just buzz loudly during the freezes.

Looking in Event Viewer today I find the following occurring right about the same time the freeze/buzzing happened:

Event ID 9

Source: JRAID

The device, \Device\Scsi\JRAID1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Does JRAID1 correspond to SATA1?

There were downloads running during the movie, but I've never had that interfere with anything before.

All help appreciated.

Revision 2.1 - it is the only version of the "EP" iteration of this board.

BIOS is F2.

I am not using the two purple SATA ports. I'm using SATA0 through SATA4.

Getting this error could mean that your hard disk controller is not working well. Check to see if you have difficulty accessing the hard disk (slow), or if the hard disk is having trouble powering up. Even though the controller is not working well you can still get all ok when running S.M.A.R.T. checks.

I read that page prior to posting - it came up in Google.

I checked the drive firmware for all 5, and came up empty on known problems.

Changed the SATA cables on all of the drives (huge pain in the arse in an Antec P180 case!) and made sure they were firmly connected at both ends. I'm using cables with the tension connectors.

HDTach returns expected results with all drives - no problems accessing them, or getting them to spin up - they all appear during POST and there is no delay as the BIOS finds all the drives.

One drive (I cannot tell which SATA connector equates to JRAID1, if any do directly) was the source of the movie and also was the target drive for some downloads, but I do that all the time and have never had a problem before. The movie file was encoded in Divx, so it was pretty small, and the CPU was hardly busy.

Thanks for the help. Anything else anyone can think of is welcomed.

well, what does the HDD manufacturer's tools say about their drives?

how much space is left on the drive that failed.

All the drives come up without errors using Seatools.

I am not sure which drive (if any - it may be the controller is the issue) is connected to the error in Event Viewer. "JRAID1" is the only reference. I don't know if that corresponds to a particular SATA port or not.

The drive that was the source of the movie and also the download target is a Seagate 750GB, with 151GB free space. My OS drive is a 60GB partition on a 500GB drive, and has 50.3GB free. It is regularly defragmented.

Could it be the movie you were playing was very fragmented? Try defragmenting the drives and see if that eliminates the skips.
