|  [DW7000] Does HughesNet Slow Down BitTorrent Traffic?
Hey all, I know the FAP policy pretty much stops torrenting for the most part, but there's a new tool to actually test if an ISP is traffic shaping. I still haven't been able to get access to the test server because it's supposedly busy, but I will post here when I have the results. |

| Well, I was unable to complete the test. For some reason the java applet is hanging on one of the last processes and not letting me through. I'm still hoping this will prove conclusively whether or not HughesNet is shaping this type of connection.
Anyone else have better luck with the test? |

Here's a link to the original post. It looks like TorrentFreak is compiling a list of ISP's that throttle/shape BitTorrent.
I still can't get past the java applet on the test server. Maybe HughesNet is blocking it? If any of you can complete the test, please let me know what the results are for our ISP. |

While It would be very easy for me to believe that Hughes is throttling Bittorrent traffic, I think the majority of torrent slowness on Hughes is due to the fact that without a static IP you can't have incoming connections. Basically Hughes has an incoming firewall at the modem level, that you cannot disable. So whatever port you choose (6881 is the default I think) will be blocked.
Also I should warn you, it is theorized by some on this forum (including me) that using Bittorrent at all will mark you as an abuser for the 4pm-12am throttling. Just a friendly warning.

| Hughes does throttle torrenting during prime time. But if you have a torrent with alot of seeders then you can usually download at good speeds outside of prime time. Best thing to do is get utorrent set it's scheduler to go slow until the Fap free time and then turn the faucet wide open. I can usually nab 500 to 1gb in an overnight. Lot of it depends on what your downloading. The new beta version of utorrent works the best with Hughes. They've incorporated a protocol obfuscation method to get around packet shaping technology.

I don't use BitTorrent, but I wanted to see if this test can prove conclusively that Hughes DOES in fact throttle/shape BT traffic so they can be added to the list of ISPs that censor customer usage and the wiki be edited to reflect that as well (right now it only mentions what you said about the NAT problem that the NOC firewall causes and nothing about any traffic shaping). I realize the general consensus is that Hughes is unfriendly towards p2p (my theory as well), but I don't want to speculate if there are alternatives. 
So if anyone can complete the test and post their results, that would be great!

I was able to complete the test, finally!  According to the results, Hughes does NOT throttle port 6881 up or down. This was confirmed on a non-standard BitTorrent port as well. Details on how the test is performed can be found here.
So, did everyone get that? HUGHES DOES NOT THROTTLE/SHAPE BITTORRENT. IT IS PROVEN
