| 502 errors (STILL and AGAIN)
(from a prior post) In talking w/ a Cox subscriber from San Diego, a lot of the "502 errors" are generated by the highwinds server not releasing the IP after disconnect. The next time you are connected to the news server, it "sees" your last connection as current, thus disconnecting you for "too many connections" to the news server. Perhaps not directly a DSLX problem, and hard to document from the DSLX path to news server, Cox was finally able to get highwinds to correct the front-end authentication server problem. In a nutshell, the problem is with highwinds. Getting it resolved is another matter. _________________________ Until and unless DSLX confronts Highwinds about this problem, we will all(NG users)be affected by it to some extent(twice today for me). |

| I feel ya... been having this problem since the changeover to Highwinds myself. I'm wondering what the problem is... but it doesn't look to be solved anytime soon. This is what happens when too much power (control of newsgroups) is in too few hands (companies like Highwinds). |

| reply to combdyn I was having all these 502 errors (I use Newsleecher) but everything worked fine once I deleted my current connections, cleared out all my group cache and recreated the connections.
I'd recommend trying that, if it still doesn't work maybe uninstall/reinstall of your software. |

| (newsuser) From your earlier posts, it looks as though you were having entirely different issues w/ 502 errors. You said you could keep a solitary connection to the news server, but could not carry two. This is quite different than carrying two for a while, having DSLX disconnect, and on reconnect having the news server not even carry one thread w/ "502 errors". Thanks for your input, and let's see how your "502 errors" and connections are working for you over the next month. Cheers P.S. Perhaps my issue is discrete from yours in that my line is Qwest serviced. |

| Hi combdyn -
If you can export some logs from your news reader program when the issue occurs I would be happy to forward those along to the news server provider to review.
Thanks -- George General Manager DSL Extreme Will work for reviews. |

| reply to combdyn yep. this problem sucks. This problem almost always happen to me when I'm going an article update. The stupid update process would hang, forcing me to shut down Newsleecher. And when Newsleecher is restarted and I try to continue the update, boom! 502 errors. Never fails to get this error.
At first I welcome the higher speed, but i'm having second thought. I feel that who ever is running the newsgroup show are a bunch of incompetent programmers. George, maybe you should just tell those guys running the show to just come in here and read all the complaints. Sure DSLX uers are not the only users complaining about this. I just think they don't give a crap.
Here's my little log from Newsleecher, if it means anything to them.

| From the couple of people I have heard experiencing this issue it appears that a few are using NewsLeecher. As newsuser mentioned above have you tried deleting the connection, clearing cache and recreating the connection? Would you mind trying another program to see if the problems happens in that program as well?
I appreciate you sending the logs. If you could please send me your username via IM I would be happy to forward that along to the news server provider. -- George General Manager DSL Extreme Will work for reviews. |

| (dslx_gm) I am not using Newsleecher. I use Grabit mostly, and it does not log (or if it does I have not found provision). I do have BNR2 loaded, and will try to use it to keep logs for you. The 502 problem is not a constant problem. It occurs when DSLX disconnects me, and then auto reconnects. If I am NG d'loading @ the time, I will have the entire batch of files failed w/ 502's. Some days there are no disconnects, some days there are a dozen disconnects. |

| reply to dslx_gm I've used Newsbin Pro and this issue also happened to Newsbin, not just Newsleecher. I'll try to see if I can load up Newsbin and will see if it logs failure. But the reason why you see a lot of Newsleecher users is because Newsleecher is one of the most popular newsgroup program out there, so it's not surprised that you've seen many complaints related to it.
This problem didnt happen with the old newsgroup provider. So those guys knew what they were doing.
I'll send you my account info now |

| reply to combdyn I've installed Newsbin and tried to do download all the headers of two large newsgroups that would almost always give me the "502" error. Newsbin didn't appear to hang on me after downloading 2.75 GB of data. Usually, downloading this much data worth news headers using Newsleecher WILL hang me up with the 502 error. Hmmm, perhaps Newsbin plays nicer with the news provider? I don't know, but I'll be using Newsbin now and will post an update if Newsbin hangs on me. |

| update: well so far to date, Newsbin has not given me the "502 too many connections" error. However, I feat that I could be just lucky?
Can those of you that are having the 502 error try out Newsbin and post back here? Newsbin has a free-trial period so you don't have to buy it. |

| reply to combdyn Not anything but lucky. This is a snip from Cox using highwinds. Response is froim Cox Tech. Sooner or later the people @ DSLX admin. will get it. Obviously, it takes a lot of bitching and follow through from ISP.

First of all, I apologize for any inconvenience. I've been in contact with the appropriate personnel on our end and the issue is currently being investigated.

| reply to combdyn So far, I've used Newsbin to download over 3.5 gb of data, with over 1 gb of this due to headers data. Either I must have been extremely lucky to not get a 502 error, or Newsbin seems to be playing nice. And during this time, I've gotten several 502 errors from using Newsleecher when updating headers (about 200 mb worth of data).
I'm curious to know if anyone else is using Newsbin and their experience. For now, I'm sticking with Newsbin! |

| reply to combdyn (snip) To eliminate the possiblity of the news client being the cause of 502's use the following steps. If you get a 502 with your favorite news reader (News Leecher, BNR2, News Bin Pro, Agent etc.) close the news reader. Open the command prompt and use the Telnet command. For each connection you are allowed you need to open a new command prompt window and execute the command. If you still get a 502 you absolutly know the problem is NOT with the news reader because you are not even using it to connect to the news server.
For me it is two connections. If everything is working correctly I will "force" a 502 on the third telnet command.
For me the command is: telnet news.dslextreme.com 119
119 being the port you are using to connect to the news server. To my knowledge it is the most common one used. However, I would check your settings to make sure you are using the same port. Having the port incorrect and not included along with "any" typo's including spacing will cause the command to fail. Naturally you will have to allow the command to go out through your firewall and substitute your connection string to DSL Extreme.
Example of Incorrect Command and Response:
telnet news.dslextreme Connecting To news.dslextreme...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed
--------------------------------------------
Example of Correct Command and Response with no 502's:
telnet news.dslextreme.com 119
200 Welcome (Tornado v1.0.8)
-----------------------------------------------
Example of Correct Command and Response with 502's:
502 Maximum number of connections reached. (Tornado v1.0.8.423)
Connection to host lost
-------------------------------------------------
Other Command Prompt commands that are helpful (edited out is my IP for obvious reasons)
Displays protocol statistics and current TCP/IP network connections.
NETSTAT [-a] [-b] [-e] [-n] [-o] [-p proto] [-r] [-s] [-v] [interval]
-a Displays all connections and listening ports. -b Displays the executable involved in creating each connection or listening port. In some cases well-known executables host multiple independent components, and in these cases the sequence of components involved in creating the connection or listening port is displayed. In this case the executable name is in [] at the bottom, on top is the component it called, and so forth until TCP/IP was reached. Note that this option can be time-consuming and will fail unless you have sufficient permissions. -e Displays Ethernet statistics. This may be combined with the -s option. -n Displays addresses and port numbers in numerical form. -o Displays the owning process ID associated with each connection. -p proto Shows connections for the protocol specified by proto; proto may be any of: TCP, UDP, TCPv6, or UDPv6. If used with the -s option to display per-protocol statistics, proto may be any of: IP, IPv6, ICMP, ICMPv6, TCP, TCPv6, UDP, or UDPv6. -r Displays the routing table. -s Displays per-protocol statistics. By default, statistics are shown for IP, IPv6, ICMP, ICMPv6, TCP, TCPv6, UDP, and UDPv6; the -p option may be used to specify a subset of the default. -v When used in conjunction with -b, will display sequence of components involved in creating the connection or listening port for all executables. interval Redisplays selected statistics, pausing interval seconds between each display. Press CTRL+C to stop redisplaying statistics. If omitted, netstat will print the current configuration information once.
