I have been fooling with my new machine and cme across something interesting. I was disappointed with the Phenom's speed. I downloaded and ran CPUZ--which shows th processor's speed in real time. I noticed it was only running at half speed. 1100MHz instead of 2.2GHZ. I ran a benchmark or 2 and the speed of the CPU never went up to it's capability. I opened control panel, performace options and then power settings. The setting was on power saver mode. Switching this to performance mode let the speed jump to it's 2.2GHZ. Benchmark scores doubled. If you select "balanced mode"----then the CPU runs at 50 percent for half the time and 100 the other half. Benchmarks are in between. I don't know if the PCs come from the factory with power settings like that or not---mine was open box. But if they do--I wonder how many buyers are only getting half the speed out of their new PCs? I wonder if Intel systems are the same or not or if ACER or any other brand is similar? Anyways--maybe this is a dumb thing but I didn't know and I have a few relatives with new HP machines. I know a few here bought new ones too so thought I'd mention it.

reply to Rifleman Rifleman, you can probably disable Cool n' Quiet in the BIOS. CnQ is cool if you want to save power, but for maximum performance it's best disabled. I have it disabled on my Opteron machine and both cores always run at 2.6GHz.
reply to Rifleman Looked for it in the BIOS. It isn't there and supposedly Windows Vista's drivers control it---hence the power settings and speed loss I guess. This is a desktop by the way--not a laptop.

Set the power options to Maximum Performance. In the Maximum Performance settings, set the Minimum CPU to 100% and the Maximum CPU to 100%. That should have you running at full speed all the time. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.

reply to Rifleman before i purchased my new PC, i did some research and even though the new Phenom processors are newer than many of the Intel ones, they simply don't compare in terms of performance...i was originally not going to get the PC i did get because the Q6600 is kind of "old", but it still spanks the Phenom 9500, 9600 and 9700, badly. -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

reply to andyb Like hell--he's 15---I pumped gas full time after school for my money. Walked into Solid Sound the day I turned 16 and bought a 800 dollar Pioneer Casette deck and door speakers. Installed it myself. Not enough bass so bought a set of Realistic Mach 1 house speakers and put them in the back seat. God I had a blast in that old car. If he wants a new game machine it`s on his sweat this time.
