| reply to kronf I'm sure they can make it work. Even if they had to spend a little extra on equipment, they're saving not digging and being able to lay it much, much faster saving on installation labor costs i would think more countries should take interest in that. |

| reply to kronf I had a few people believing Google's TISP was real...(until April 2nd of course) looks like someone's actually taking that idea and making it real.. (did google get a patent? :P) But this is obviously not going to run through people's toilets.
This certainly makes sense - why dig when you don't need to - cables can be run attached to the top of the sewer pipe - keeps them out of the way and out of water. |

| Although this is topical, since its in light of Googles April Fools joke.. There are a few small locations that have done this.
If memory serves, Gray County (Ontario) has been working closely with an ISP to lay fibre throughout its mountain communities, utilizing the sewer system. Also upgrading their smaller community to sewage systems where possible.
The Network is ADSL, so.. its a rather expensive solution @ 5mb @ 89.99/mo, but considering the amount of cable they're installing, at least you'll be paying as much as you would for a crappy Satellite internet.. at a speed which everyone else in the world is linking to.
Anyhow.. I thought this was a better example than the one in the article...At least more widespread....
And I guess since they're installing their own network, they'll be free of Bell's throttle?

Most of the smaller communities have already installed the infrastructure in their systems, but as you can see, the initiative started out centrally, and its blossoming out, somewhat equally.. throughout the county. It'll still be awhile before everyone is connected, but its a rather huge undertaking..
We might think these communities are backwater, but I've driven through some of them.. You'd be surprised to know that although some of these places only have 1000 ppl living in them, you find a rather elaborate IT Businesses thriving by servicing the surrounding areas. |

 Proton Station from 1000' |
If you take a look at the PDF, it looks like Proton Station is getting the screw there (Map Right)... Not that there was much going on to begin with. |

| reply to kronf I'm originally from that county and after having a quick look at those links I imediately realized who the company is that is rolling out this infrastructure.
I have heard mixed opinions on Everus Communications formerly known as High Speed FX. The infrastrucure they are rolling out is a wireless internet infrastructure and they are relying a lot on users of the service to allow them to install towers on their properties. I know this bit because my mom had looked into getting their service prior to the Broadband Initiative but they wanted to install a tower on her property and make her pay for part of tower setup costs etc.
Like I said not 100% sure on the quality of the service but the price certainly seems to be REALLY HIGH
