Come over to Ottawa maybe? I did a trip to Oshawa and back and burnt $96 in fuel two weeks ago, and that was in a land-barge Impala. It wouldn't be bad at all in your Mitsubishi. 1000 Islands is actually along the way to so you could leave in the morning, take the boat tour out into the St Lawrence and then continue up in the evening.
You've got the benifit of a semi-large city when looking for accommodations, meals and the like while having quick access to the Gatineau Hills and other scenic areas around the valley. At the same time, there are numerous more urban tourist destinations of a national scope around the city that would compliment your guests' Canadian experience.
