[OC] New Machine Questions

Q6600, 4gigs DDR2 pc6400 g. skill, gigabyte mobo ep35 DS3P Vista 64 bit. I'm just starting to overclock this machine and want to go slow a little at a time. I want my dram frequency to be 1:1 Right now I have it at 9x275=2.48 My memory frequency according to the bios is 825. CPU-Z says dram frequency is 412.5 and the ratio is 2:3. In the bios it is set to auto. What value do I have to set the System Memory Multi to in order to achieve a 1:1 ratio?

Take FSB and multiply by 2 .. is what you want to set in BIOS.

If you want to go with 1:1 (FSB:RAM) - means you should not set RAM to AUTO in BIOS.

Ex: If you set your FSB to 400, then RAM should be set to DDR-800 .. which means you run your CPU @ 9x400 -- 3.6GHz.

If your gigabyte board is anything like mine (GA-965P-S3) then what you want to do is change the memory from Auto to 2.00. Doing that makes the memory run at twice your FSB which keeps the 1:1 ratio that you are looking for. Then ramp it up from there. I currently am running my Q6600 at 8 * 350 with a 1:1 on the memory. Need to fix the massive voltage droop I get when going to load before I can go any further.

Using the fps in Crysis as a measure of performance. I seem to get better fps when setting everything back to auto except the "Performance" tab which I set to "Extreme". Memory is running at 400 at 2:3 and timings are 5 5 5 15.Got 25-30 fps in Crysis with this. When I upped the fsb to 300(2.7ghz) the bios raised the vcore to 1.4 and my idle temps went from low to mid 30's to mid 40's and only got low 20's in Crysis. Should I worry about those temps or would it be better to manually set the vcore. I have no idea what to set the vcore at in order to keep it stable and not too hot. I see alot of people overclocking this chip. Would be nice if you could do it by just raising the fsb.

I'd recommend going Here and following the overclocking instructions, it should get you a nice stable overclock as long as you take your time to verify stability. Following that guide you will get the most effecient baseline to start from (no OC just best setttings for stock) then get you a decent OC.

Thanks for the link. It is very informative. I followed it and did the mild overclock. The machine ran stable but hot. During Crysis I had core temps of 55c. Too hot for my liking especially with a minimum gain in frame rates. I am using the stock cooling right now. I set the cpu back to stock speed of 2.4ghz but kept my memory at 1:1. Are those core temps in the 50's safe to run?

with stock cooling your temps are going to be in the high 50's- low 60's C. on load during OCing. You can run it that way safely but most people will buy another HSF cooler to keep the temps lower and enable a higher OC.
