It is most likely my fault, so to speak. Seems it only happens if I leave to laptop alone for 10-15 minutes. Forgot to mention this in the initial post. Thanks for the info. Rich -- Claiming that guns kill people is like blaming your keyboard for misspelling words. |

| reply to rcdiver If you set to "automatically obtain" for your IP address rather than a static address, there should not be a conflict.
If you are getting the message, I suspect that guests arrive with static IP assignements in the same subnet. In other words, lets say the DHCP server gives you the address: 192.168.1.101 However, a guest is checked in whose laptop is set to this same IP staticly. The router's DHCP server knows nothing about this static client, so it issues a conflicting IP from its DHCP scope.
It is also possible that the conflicting IP is in fact -- you. If the hotel has set a fairly short DHCP Lease (something that is common to do) then beginning when the Lease is 40% expired Vista will make a renewal request. If there are are connectivity issues with the router for DHCP, it is possible you are trying to renew an address that has yet to be released by the router as in use. And yes, there are common DHCP failures with Vista Wireless clients unless you patch Vista:
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers »support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

| [Vista] (Wireless) IP in use by another computer, then disconnec
I am in Midland, Texas, working for the next three months. The hotel provides free WIFI. Every once in a while a popup appears stating that the IP I have is in use by another computer and I lose connection. The only recourse is to reboot as trying to reconnect to the server doesn't do anything. Is there anything I can to do keep my IP or is it just the nature of the beast, the beast being Vista or the hotel WIFI? Thanks Rich -- Claiming that guns kill people is like blaming your keyboard for misspelling words. |
