| One Care for nothing...but the chicks aren't free?
Catchy title, eh?
I saw on Amazon, YOU can buy Windows Live One Care for $0 (after a $30 rebate) and I am "tempted" LOL... ...
Here is the link for Amazon... »www.amazon.com/gp/product/rebate···software
and the link for the rebate... »g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G···516_.pdf
and, like I said.. I am "tempted"....
A couple of months ago, I tried Windows Live OneCare, and here are my impressions...
The Good... 1. Very very light on resources. 2. Excellent detection, especially with spyware. 3. They have Phone Support! And they actually were very helpful! 4. The Easy to use and setup Network program for sharing printers, etc.. 5. Even if you have to "pay" for it, it covers Three Computers... 6. Stays resource friendly... 7. "Ahlett", I believe the name was, was very helpful!
The Bad... 1. You have to sign up with or use a .passport account, and it can be a bitch. I am going to create an email account from live.com specifically for this purpose... (Sigh).. 2. The subscription is "self renewing, so next year you probably have to pay for it at full price...Any comments?
The Ugly... 1. There is a folder installed that has to do with data backup. I think it gets installed in the extra backup drive. I had to format the drive to remove it. Does anyone know anything about this and how to remove it?
More Questions... 1. Anyone use it and love it? 2, How does the subscription work? Can you cancel and sign up again with another special? 3. Is there any Free Online Backup with OneCare? I could have sworn I read that somewhere..
Thanks In Advance..
PS.. McAfee by Comcast is just too much to handle with the resources..

| reply to StraitShoot I have used Live OneCare for a couple of years now and have no complaints. I hardly even notice that it's there. I don't use the backup feature, have alternative means of backup, so I can't help with that issue.
It's definitely lighter on the system than Norton, which was my previous AV of choice, as I got free copies for beta testing.

| reply to StraitShoot you can't install it without it, however, you can disable it (if you can put up with the warning about it) and not use it. You can disable almost any feature (firewall, av etc). So you can use Acronis/Ghost for backup, ZoneAlarm/Comodo for firewall, Diskeeper/Perfect as defrag and Onecare as an antivirus

| reply to StraitShoot If I can delete that folder OneCare puts on my external hard drive (how to) and once I find out about the renewing subscription, then I will probably take the plunge...
Has anyone ever "fiddled" with this?

| reply to gjrhine Spybot has nothing to do with Windows OneCare, and I really don't care about Spybot anyway. It's been years since I've used it.
Please don't hijack this thread, with Spybot stuff.

| Spybot has everything to do with this thread because it is getting spyware that One Care is not. This is an answer to your question "Anyone use it and love it?". -- Gary in South Carolina --For a list of all the ways technology has failed to improve the quality of life, please press three. |

| Oh boy.. The wisecracks begin..
I ask questions, I get wisecracks..
What good is security software when it slows down your system to a crawl...?
One of the few I've been able to find that doesn't kill resources is Windows OneCare..
Spybot to me is ancient; it's a joke.. It's well past it's time.. Hmmmm? You ask, anon poster, have I been asleep?
At least I know what's yesterday's news, and what's the latest... |

And now you're derailing your own thread-- the very thing you just asked the rest of us not to do.
Enjoy. |
