DSL Service goes down periodically..

I have had Windsteam for over 2 years without any issues, the last month or so I am constantly having the service disconnect. I am a mile from the remote, when it is up, it is fine. Sometimes rebooting the modem gets it working again. The message in the log I see is "Waiting- Initializing-Waiting-Initializing" during the outages, and the DSL shows up "Not Trained". The only thing I can relate it to was my one year old plugging a Cat5 cable that was "Live" from a switch into the Phone jack that goes into my Phone distribution unit. But I even replaced the filter to insure it wasn't fried. It has been a bit better, but once in Awhile it still goes out. Could it be the modem? Do you hink it is line noise and a coincidence with the Cat5 cable being plugged into the phone lines?
Thanks,

Hard to say with the limited info you provided, so we have to start from the beginning. How does the phone line sound, throughout the house, and at the phone jack in question. Possible loose connection at the jack, or behind the plate, also check inside the outlet for evidence of corrosion. If that is clear, then log into youre modem and check for the SNR, (signal strength), and Attenuation (resistance in the copper loop). To log into the modem enter 192.168.254.254, admin/admin, click dsl stats and look for the SNR, and attenuation. If youre SNR is in single digits, youre dsl connection is very weak. If so, plug the modem into the phone test plug at the NID (outside box), and check the SNR stats again, if they jump significantly, then the problem is in the house, filter issue. If not then, its a line issue outside, or bad modem. Either of which will need a field tech visit to the home to isolate the trouble. Dont call the DSL help desk in india, call for a field visit from a tech, you will get nothing solved with the 1 st level helpdesk.

SNR is 23.5 and 24.0, Attn 21.0, constantly as long as it is up. Was hearing some noise on the phone lines during the last few weeks as well. They checked the lines and said it was fine when they checked that day. I have been on the phone with Level 1 and it is useless.
Just looking for a anything to isolate the issue. Looks like I will be living with this until they check the line at a time it is noisy.
The run from outside is Cat5 and goes right into the phone jack I use for DSL. For whatever reason it has been better as of late, but still goes down once in awhile.

If you have static on the line this is the cause, and your SNR likely drops as a result and you lose sync. Pursue repair via the Residential service; log a residential repair ticket. Keep logging tickets until the static on the line is resolved, contact the PSC (Public Service Commission) if necessary or let Windstream know this will be your next step if resolution isn't reached.

Ignore the DSL issues, they are simply a symptom as a result of the static on the line.

Agreed with evilghost, the static could be a minor short on the line from moisture, or a bad spot where the line is breaking in two, what we call a high open. Next time you hear the static, go to the NID, plug a telephone into the test jack, and see if the static persists, if it does, the problem is outside, if not, the problem is inside. Check the back of the jack for a loose wire, and check where it runs to, and see if a loose connection is in the NID.
