| reply to Hayward Re: [Serious] Tea bags/gallon of tea?
Hey old chap, just trying to turn making tea into an art form. For me, the less tannin in a glass of tea, the better. While it is responsible for the coloration of the tea, it also can make a tea bitter or chalky. So it is good to know how few tea leaves I can get away with. This is one of the reasons that I feel 'sun tea' is far superior to other methods of brewing. Another factor that can change the amount of tea leaves needed is the blend used. For instance, with a Darjeeling, I would use about two thirds the amount as I would with most other blends of tea leaves. And so on.... |

| In the end though it really all comes down to inividual tastes. Personally I like a strong (not necessarily bitter, tea and wouldn't think of EVER putting a creamer in it, a little lemon or lime maybe. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| I like my tea as follows:
~ 1 qt of boiling water 1 cup of sugar. (bring to boil)
Once to a full rolling boil, shut off heat, and add 4 "family size" tea bags (you know, what the instructions say... ), and let steep for a few minutes.
Pour over ice cubes, and dilute to 1 gal.
THEN, mix 2 cups "Real Lemon", 2 cups sugar, enough water to make a gallon. (Excellent lemonade on its own)
Mix equal portions lemonade and tea --> mmmmmmmmm |

| TWO CUPS of LEMON that is a PINT or 12.5% and as much sugar also 12.5% or between the two 25% of volume... and likely the obscene calories of a real Coke!!! And in the end 1 gal and a quarter (Though the solid sugar might make it more even higher volume)... or in the end even MORE concentrated if still in the end just a gallon and less water....WOW
Ever thought of backing of on BOTH in proportion for same effect???
Again as a I said above personal tastes is what rules in the end, and as said I'd NEVER creamer tea... the English almost always do, which makes the thread sort of there will never be a definative definition. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| Calories make it taste good. Real Coke is good, too.
The lemonade is diluted to 1 gal after the sugar is dissolved, so it's probably slightly less concentrated (I think the dissolved sugar takes up less volume than the solid)... Backing off in proportion would keep the same sweetness, but weaker lemonade. |

| Even though you are BOARDER line in NC, that is a southern thing isn't it...Tea FLAVORED SUGAR WATER.
And as a northern boy have developed a taste for grits....
But sorry, Sweet tea is just plain NAUSEATING!!!! Again tea flavored sugar water.
Though honestly maybe the best iced tea I ever had was mad by a family that moved to the NE from much farther So OK, justs the right balance of sweet, lemon, and tea... still actually taste like properly accented tea more than anything else. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| Funny thing is that I'm originally from CT and often had unsweetened tea in the house. Before moving to NC, I'd order tea at a restaurant and never add sugar (it was not sweetened). My first sweet tea 'restaurant' experience was on a hot day when I was looking for a refreshing drink and ordered a large iced tea from McD's. I took two sips of the brown sugar water and tossed the rest of it--I couldn't drink it. Somehow, I must've become acclimated since then... |

| reply to Fisamo While I do sweeten both hot and iced tea slightly, I can't stand southern SWEET TEA.(tea flavored sugar)
And BTW way local (not chain) Coffee and TEA house (of KW) asked them that very question.... yes enough ask for it, we are going to start offering it as destible as even owner thinks it is, but they want their tea flavored barely liquid sugar... we'll sell it to them. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| sweet tea should have 2 cups of sugar to each gallon of tea made. the sugar MUST be added while the tea is still hot so that it disolves in properly. adding sugar/sweetener to tea after it is iced and you get one drink sweetened, the next not.
we use 3 family sized bags per gallon using a tea maker. if we have the small bags we used 5-6 of them and set the maker on strong brew.
we did switch to unsweetened tea several months back and that is all we make at home now. if i go to a restaurant that i KNOW makes good sweet tea i order sweet, if i am not sure i order unsweet. i cannot stand sweet tea that was not properly prepared/sweetened. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| Sorry onece again... to each their, own but SWEET TEA even PROBERLY made is nausiating... again it is tea flavored sugar not just sweetened tea.
ONE packet MAX per 12 oz glass for me... I actually like tea... the sugar is a spice, not a major ingredient. Same for iced coffee I have also seen made nausiatingly, instant tooth rotting sweet in the south. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)
