[Modem] nat type on Motorola MSTATEA Modem

I'm new to this site, and not realy sure if I'm posting in the right place, so sorry for any incovenice this may cause...But hopfuly someone can help me...I'm kinda lost when it comes to this kinda stuff, but hear it is...

I'm a hard core gamer, mostly PS3 and I hook directly into my modem,(Motorola MSTATEA Modem) via/cable...For the longest time my nat type has been type2, and there have been no issues...

But running threw my PS3 internet connection I dicided to run a test...Everything came back fine but the nat type was 3...I thought that when connecting directly to the modem that only nat 2 or 1 was available...Just gose to show how much I know...

So my question is, what causes this and how can I change it to nat 1 or 2...I've read other places that its caused by your ISP setting up a fire wall and that you have to turn it off...How is this done...?

Also can installing a fire wall like systems mechanic pro on you PC cause this...?

Hello, MillertimE7 See Profile. Welcome to the site. I am going to move you over to the regional AT&T forum where you are located, and where people may be more familiar with your modem.

When the 2210 is set up to do the PPPoE it will also give out a private IP address, that could be why you get the nat messages.

You can change the 2210 to give out the public IP address
Or you can change the 2210 to bridge mode
Either one should get rid of the nat messages.

I can't say why your nat type went from type 2 to type 3

Well, see heres the prob, I know where in the PS3 the PPPoE is but as far as changing 2210 to give out the public IP I'm lost...Like I said kinda lost when it comes to this stuff...So could you kindly give me a step by step on how to do this...I would thank you a million...I not sure but I've been told that if the ISP I'm with set a firewall up on there side, that would change my nat type to 3, and that I would have to call and have them disable the firewall to get back my nat 2...is there any truth to this...?Once again thank you for your help...

Try this page: »192.168.1.254/conncfg.htm

Unless they changed the name, as well as the IP address, between the SpeedSream 4100 (I had to edit the IP address) and the Motorola 2210.

See my screen shot; should be very similar to the Motorola.
I not sure but I've been told that if the ISP I'm with set a firewall up on there side, that would change my nat type to 3...
AFAIK, AT&T does not use proxies, which is what you were told. NAT Type 3 might refer to "Cascaded NAT", which is what happens when the Motorola 2210 handles the PPPoE session, and assigns a private IP address to the router. Changing the page, as shown in my screen shot, to share a public IP address should change that (as would putting the modem into bridged mode. That is handled by the "PPP Location" button in the modem menus).

It is very simple
Before you attempt to do anything have a look at this FAQ
Images of the Motorola 2210 and it's GUI
It has images of the modem pages where you'll be making changes (print them if needed)
Look at the PPP Location Page on this page you can have the modem do the PPPoE or let the game do it

Also the Connection Configuration Page this is where you can select to use the public IP

Depending on how the modem is set up now you may also need the modem access code write it down and have it handy

Ok, thank you all a million...Your all gave very easy detailed help, even for someone like me to understand...One more question before I tinker with this, should I only do one of these or both, (ex)change the PPPoE to bridged and put the Priv IP to yes, or just do one...?

I don't think it is possible to do both. I don't see how you can even configure the modem for running a PPPoE session while it is in bridged mode.

You can have only one PPPoE session active.
Why don't you post your current setup in detail?

From your first post you have a computer and a PS3 do you have a switch or router or do you move the patch cable between devices?

If the ps3 does the PPPoE the modem needs to be in bridge mode.

Well the PS3 dose the PPPoE but you have to type in something manualy for it, not qite sure what...Also I have no router just the modem, so I switch the cable to what ever I'm useing.. I just got that sassis worm, I think its called, on my coumputer so I haven't even been able to change anything on my modem...My cuz is a Tec for some company and he's going to take a look at it, but not till this weekend...I tryed looking up my settings, and changing them hear at work...But the computer I use either wont let me, or thats something that has to be done from home...So I kinda stuck right now...

I will suggest that you let the modem do the PPPoE and select the setting of "Yes use public IP address"

That should eliminate the "nat type" messages from the ps3

The computer will need its tcp/ip properties set manually
Here is a image with the settings

Ok, so what I need to do is click yes-use public IP address and then go into my Internet Portocol Properties and set all stuff up that way...../\/\/\...??

The only number thats diffrent in the (TCP/IP) is the IP address, all the other setting are the same as what I already have...

Also I have windows 2000, were do I pull up the (TCP/IP) from...??

Sorry for all the questions, I realy know little when I comes to fine tuning things like this on my computer...But thank you for all your help....

Try this:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
Match the settings in the image
Click OK to accept the changes to your TCP/IP configuration.
Click OK to close Local Area Connections properties.
