Researchers said Windows XP Service Pack 3 delivers a measurable performance boost when compared with Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

Windows XP runs some applications up to 10% faster with the latest service pack installed, a research firm has found.
"We were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS," wrote staff at exo.performance.network, in a blog post.

A similarly configured system running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 took more than 50 seconds to complete the test suite -- which measures how quickly a computer can perform common tasks in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
"Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release ... the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus," the researchers wrote.
They added that XP SP3's slick performance may lead some computer users to forgo Windows Vista. Exo.performance.network found that with the new service pack, XP is now two times faster than the newer Microsoft OS.
The tests were conducted late last year on a prerelease build of XP SP3. So it's possible the final version is even faster.
It's not all four-star reviews for the service pack, however.

Since installing SP3 i have notice a speed increase on my XP Pro Intel P4 3.00GHz system, i haven't installed SP3 on my wife's XP home Intel P4 1.4 GHz or my daughters XP Pro Intel Celeron computers as yet maybe i should.

I have noticed and increase of speed in loading of applications and Boot-Up time (when I reboot) with SP3 installed. I haven't installed SP3 on my wifes computer yet, or the kids computer either. |

I'll be interested to load it on our laptop and see what happens there. |

I reinstalled Windows XP a month before SP3. I've noticed no difference after installing SP3.

Husband and I use the same pc and both of us have noticed a speed/performance improvement with WinXP Home since I installed SP3 Sat night. Machine boots faster, user log on/off is faster, desktop gui icons loading faster, and especially, on the web, FX 2.0.0.14 is loading pages faster. I only run Comodo FWP, Avast HomeEd and Sunbelt Counterspy and rarely have more than 2-3 tabs open in FX.

I don't think a 10% difference would be discernable or a reason to install the Service Pack.
But what does whether or not SP3 makes XP "faster" have to do with security? Doesn't this belong in Microsoft Help forum? |

Good god.
Really people? Really? You buy this? SP3? The service pack that adds absolutely NO features that would have ANY effect on performance?
I understand that not everyone here understands the inner workings of an OS, but seriously. 5 minutes worth of reading would have cleared this up.
SP3 does not give a performance boost. It's just an update rollup that contains a few enterprise level features that 99.999 percent of you will never use. |

I've found that in my case with SP3, IE7 is noticeably slower, particularly with multiple tabs open. The more tabs open, the more noticeable the slowdown.

I have to disagree here. I've noticed a good difference in both my rigs after install. I thinks it has a lot to do with the way the pack is integrated though. Instead of multiple fixes, it implements a cohesive service pack, and it makes a difference. As a point, I did gain 3.2GB of drive space back after the upgrade. I think it all just plays nicer together.
Just my opinion though.

I have had XPSP3 RC2 full retail running on 4 computers for a month, it works better if not faster on all them! I have noticed the greatest improvement on my oldest Dell P4, also some programs like photoshop cs3 seem to be faster. I think its a matter of different hardware/software situations you have as to speed, but its "better" running on all of them. I haven't noticed any of them running slower or "worse". |

What a bunch of bullshit-Sp3 is a completely re-vamped OS not just a bunch of updates combined! Many of the improvements you claim many people would never use are not seen by anyone but are working in the background. Its the best OS there is in my opinion and well worth the money to buy the retail CD if you can afford it. |

Oh really? You mean Microsoft is selling XP ProSP3 disks and you can walk in a store and buy one? That is interesting since June 30 the OEM XP deadline.
