Migrating to Symantec ES V 11.0

Has anyone migrated from SAV CE 10.x to endpoint security 11? After a look at the migration/upgrade and some comments on the web, it appears fraught with pot holes and opportunities for disaster.

My customers (Win2K3 and SBS2003 servers, XP Pro clients) simply don't have test sservers to use, and the last thing we need is a dead or corrupted production system.

I looked into it, but many colleagues in the field have proven it to me that it is full of pitfalls.

I'm holding onto my CE deployment - for now.

Same here. In our small office of about 12 workstations, no way I'm 'upgrading' to v.11 with all the horror stories out there. We're sticking with 10.x until the next version is released, at least.

Did two customer upgrades from v10.x to Endpoint and both ended up being dog's (system resources WAY to high). Called Symantec and their suggestion was to build a new server just for the antivirus to get decent performance.

Removed Endpoint and switched them to Kaspersky Corperate and they perform great. Since then we have switched all our customers from Symantec to Kaspersky as Symantec expires, now have around 25 SBS networks running Kaspersky without a hickup.

All of my clients are moving to Trend as their maintenance renewals come around. I've done 5 clients and about 250 workstations so far. Symantec really screwed themselves with SEP 11.

Is 10.1.7.7000 the latest 10.x version out there?

There's a 10.2 version out I know that works for Vista and I assume other Windows versions too

10.2 is Vista only.

The 10.2 that I got from fileconnect has the Vista installer but also has the WIN32 XP version in it.

BTW Thanks all for the replies . At this point, I'm not putting my customers at risk by trying to go to V 11.

Did the Symantec uninstalls go fairly successfully on your clients? I've had trouble with several PCs (about 5-10%) where the uninstall failed and I had to go through the mind-numbing manual removal.

I need to look at Kapersky, I assume they have a centrally managed package where I can do remote scans, log checking etc.

Here's a great how-to on removing SAV remotely. I've had 0 failures using this method.

Re: Migrating to Symantec ES V 11.0

For a complete SAV uninstaller, call Symantec and ask for NoNav2.1.exe. They will give you a temporary account on an
FTP for you to download it.

Re: Migrating to Kapersky

RE: Did the Symantec uninstalls go fairly successfully on your clients? I've had trouble with several PCs (about 5-10%) where the uninstall failed and I had to go through the mind-numbing manual removal.

I have had the same problem and about 10% of the computer with Symantec not wanting to uninstall, even before installing Kaspersky. It gets almost all the way through the uninstall process and hangs trying to stop the Symantec Event Manager service (the service show "stopping, but never does). The uninstall then aborts and Symantec is pretty much hosed.

The way I found around it on the problem computers is to set all the Symantec services to disabled, restart the computer and re-run setup from the SAV server's vphome directory and choose the uninstall option from setup. It sure beats the manual removal process...

RE: I need to look at Kapersky, I assume they have a centrally managed package where I can do remote scans, log checking etc.

They do have a centrally managed package now, Kaspersky Admin kit. The Admin kit is free. The corperate edition uses four program packages, the Admin kit, Kaspersky AV for servers, Kaspersky AV for workstations and Kaspersky AV/Spam filter for Exchange. License keys are required for each program except the Admin kit.

The Admin kit is pretty cool in the fact that you can open up a port on your router and manage it remotely, even multiple installs/customers from one console. It makes management a heck of a lot less work than SAV did.

We have been ording it through TechData as a reseller, it's nice to see a major wholesaler selling Kaspersky now. Price runs about the same as SAV did. There is a bit of a learning curve with it, but the same could be said of changing to any other manufactures AV product I suppose. There is also a very good user support forum as well, the few issues I've had were answered almost instantly on the forums.
