Sci Fi HD, USA HD, and CNN HD have been on for a week or two now, but they never made an official announcement on them. They just automagically appeared. I guess they were saving it up to make one "big bang" announcement.

I haven't been home to check yet, but it's my understanding that the channels were indeed turned on today.

I see this as good but bad.

It means...

Good news for E* subs that you now have HD channels added to bring you in line with D*. It's bad because it means that even with the AMC14 loss, E* had enough bandwidth in reserve that they sat on it and did not provide more HD channels, even though they had the reserve bandwidth to do so!

Why did E* make you wait so long when they had the bandwidth to add these HD channels?! AMC14 was padding. They should have added these sooner. What does this mean moving forward as E* is now behind with the AMC14 loss but D* has their sat ready to go live soon for even more HD?!

I HIGHLY DOUBT that, more likely med/minor market local HD deployment will now be delayed and they have now chosen the nation wide cable nets are the important thing, after the failed launch/sat loss.

These are the only channels I am missing right now.

If I sort the guide by HD channels only I have 177 channels.
Of these, 92 are unique channels.
If you take out the HDPPV, NHLHD, NBAHD, and duplicate channels you have.... 44 HD channels (this does not include the local HD channel offerings)

These 44 channels probably represent 90% of my TV viewing, with the other 10% taken up by my local OTA HD channels.

Just an FYI for those comparing apples to apples.

Update:Dish network just dropped 10 VOOM channels.

DISH Network continues to be the leader in providing the best movies, sports and entertainment in High Definition. In order to provide you with top quality entertainment, DISH Network continually evaluates and at times, makes changes to our channel line-up. We are excited to announce the addition of over 22 new high definition channels which will provide our customers with top rated programming. As of result of these additions, we removed some channels that are less popular with our customers. These channels are not available with any other satellite provider. Watch for even more high definition channels over the upcoming weeks as DISH Network grows to over 100 of the best national HD channels by end of year.

It still means they HAD bandwidth they were sitting on (be it for locals or national). That was my point. They sat on useful bandwidth. I'll agree that it will probably mean a delay in local HD rollouts. Sad.

Well don't forget first they need to get the capacity up there, then they can't just put up makets as they wish, but go through negotiations with each station in each one.

True of national HD, maybe it took a while to negotiate a fair deal vs what the network originally wanted.

It is also the possible the satelite had to be moved from a secondary arc location, that takes time and careful planning, and then retesting it all.

Many factor come into it all, its not just the "You can just Do It" thing many see it as.

Another update: The remaining Voom channels have been removed. So, Dish added 22 channels and removed 15.

Yeah...looks like Dish got a few channel numbers wrong in their press release. The Comcast Sports Network channels weren't added until today, and I believe they're regional channels (someone correct me if I'm wrong) which means you won't get them since you're in TX.

Yeah patetic VOOM got Vacced after two plus years of effectively sewer drain subsidy from DISH after they first went belly up or down the drain, and bailed out.

I must admit I am not as satisfied as I thought I would be. Many of these new channels look no better than before. They don't even offer stretch o vision on some. My kid is watching disney HD and there are black bars. Whats the point?

First, they give added incentive to those that want to switch to the cheaper HD-only package. Now there are kids programming, something that was lacking for the most part.

Second, the more subscribers there are to HD versions of these channels, the more HD content will be developed for the channels. You have to start somewhere.

Keep in mind, HD is NOT the size of the picture (4:3 or 16:9) but the resolution of the broadcast being sent to you (either 720, or 1080, verses 480 which SD is)

We all assume HD has to be 16:9, but it doesn't. So although consumers expect all HD channels to be 16:9 (which is why some channels stretch their content to give the feel of 16:9) technically it does not.

And as already mentioned, the channels them selves need to have 16:9 content to broadcast, not something Dish, or any other cable or sat company have control over.
