No there is NO requriement in the 2009 Digital Broadcast mandate that says it must be 16:9 only that it be digital, it can still be 4:3 with sidebars, and staions that carry old movies/shows it will be, unless they CHOOSE to streatch it.

SD on HD still looks better, and it is often rescanned source material (if film) so the resolution is still higher though maybe still 4:3 ratio. Even if from video better than just consummer level upconverted stuff, as it is resampled at a high rate, not just basic simple pixel/line doubling repeat multiplied.

It is not streatched because it is in HD... the black bars are still active picture area... annoyingly on many channels filled with network logo's... I prefer the black.

We all assume HD has to be 16:9, but it doesn't. So although consumers expect all HD channels to be 16:9 (which is why some channels stretch their content to give the feel of 16:9) technically it does not.

And as already mentioned, the channels them selves need to have 16:9 content to broadcast, not something Dish, or any other cable or sat company have control over.

First, they give added incentive to those that want to switch to the cheaper HD-only package. Now there are kids programming, something that was lacking for the most part.

Second, the more subscribers there are to HD versions of these channels, the more HD content will be developed for the channels. Yeah...looks like Dish got a few channel numbers wrong in their press release. True of national HD, maybe it took a while to negotiate a fair deal vs what the network originally wanted.

It is also the possible the satelite had to be moved from a secondary arc location, that takes time and careful planning, and then retesting it all.

Many factor come into it all, its not just the "You can just Do It" thing many see it as.

It still means they HAD bandwidth they were sitting on (be it for locals or national). That was my point. They sat on useful bandwidth. I'll agree that it will probably mean a delay in local HD rollouts. Sad. :huh:

These are the only channels I am missing right now.

If I sort the guide by HD channels only I have 177 channels.
Of these, 92 are unique channels.
If you take out the HDPPV, NHLHD, NBAHD, and duplicate channels you have.... 44 HD channels (this does not include the local HD channel offerings)

These 44 channels probably represent 90% of my TV viewing, with the other 10% taken up by my local OTA HD channels.

Why did E* make you wait so long when they had the bandwidth to add these HD channels?! AMC14 was padding. They should have added these sooner. What does this mean moving forward as E* is now behind with the AMC14 loss but D* has their sat ready to go live soon for even more HD?!
