| [OOL] Bit Torrent analysis via Glasnost...
Hi all,
As some of you know, there is a project on the Web which tracks Bittorrent policies across ISPs. As part of the project, a user can easily have h/her computer remotely tested to see if your ISP is fudging bits.

Here's the result of my BT test:

Is BitTorrent traffic on a well-known BitTorrent port (6881) throttled?
The BitTorrent upload (seeding) worked. Our tool was successful in uploading data using the BitTorrent protocol.
* There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP upload achieved minimal 4607 Kbps while a BitTorrent upload achieved maximal 4831 Kbps.
The BitTorrent download worked. Our tool was successful in downloading data using the BitTorrent protocol.
* There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent downloads. In our tests a TCP download achieved minimal 5317 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved maximal 6493 Kbps.
Is BitTorrent traffic on a non-standard BitTorrent port (4711) throttled?
* The BitTorrent upload (seeding) worked. Our tool was successful in uploading data using the BitTorrent protocol.
There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP download achieved minimal 4480 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved maximal 4924 Kbps.
* The BitTorrent download worked. Our tool was successful in downloading data using the BitTorrent protocol.
There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent downloads. In our tests a TCP download achieved minimal 3058 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved maximal 5021 Kbps.
Is TCP traffic on a well-known BitTorrent port (6881) throttled?
* There's no indication that your ISP rate limits all downloads at port 6881. In our test, a TCP download on a BitTorrent port achieved at least 3907 Kbps while a TCP download on a non-BitTorrent port achieved at least 4058 Kbps.
Does anyone know how accurate this applet is? By the looks of it, my setup passes just fine.

| i don't know all the technical aspects but i can tell you that test isn't very accurate. i'm beyond certain my torrents are being throttled (with boost,) and according to this test i passed as well. i first noticed the use of sandvine's rst/reset on ool back in mid november (the 14th to be exact.) maybe this test is based on that? they (ool/comcast/etc) changed their methods, however, a few weeks ago (due to those fcc hearings?) for the worse and now u/l and d/l speeds are taking a gigantic hit. |

| Yeah, I was wondering as to the accuracy of their Java tool. Right now, everything is peachy as long as a download is in progress (both down and upstream). As soon as the client finishes and attempts to seed, the speeds drop to a fraction of a kilobyte per second. I've played with the encryption settings and it doesn't look like there's much difference, even when encryption is forced.

Wouldn't it be trivial to compile a list of Glasnost servers and allow unthrottled connections to them? The few people who ran the test would think everything is OK, but it's really just a whitelist of the "throttle test" hosts.
Now, I had good nonboost speeds (about max line- 1.8MB/PS)
While I had issues, I had 300KBPS drop to 50 KBPS. It hovered between 50KBPS and 200KBPS (max, not sustainable).
A few days later, I was on the same torrents with different peers. No issues, back to 1.8MBPS(BTW, I DID test multiple trackers and torrents).
Note: I know the difference between megabits/megabytes and kilobits/kilobytes. The above are megabytes per second and kilobytes per second- if you want to be a pedant, the above speeds are mebibytes per second and kibibytes per second

why not just test using your torrents? my torrents are fine i upload max speed 24/7. well no, but as long as they are running its full speed. |

| That's the problem.. I have no problems with upstream while a torrent is being downloaded (downstream speeds are excellent from private trackers), however, as soon as the torrent is done and seeding begins, the speeds just DROP, and stay in the area of dial-up upstream.
I've tried different clients, various encryption settings, but the anomaly persists.

| That was exactly what I was thinking. Plus, they're offering instructions and source on setting up your own Glasnost servers. I'm sure the kinks in the code will be worked out, but I know at least a half dozen people who are seriously considering setting up their colocated machines witha Glasnost server.
I wonder how much bandwidth one uses per test. Time to examine the code carefully 
I personally consider MxxCon an authoritative source on BitTorrent tech and politics. But, that's me. Which is why I was curious for him to chime in

i tried this glasnost test about a month ago and passed all of their checks.
i don't know exactly how it works but this project theoretically could conclusively show which isp mess with torrents. if all clients log every packet(without the actual data payload) and then after some period of time share those logs with each other or upload to some central location to match against each other, it would be very obvious if there are any fake RST packets. and with enough samples, it would be possible to narrow down which isp(or even router/hop) generate them.
In early December i performed bunch of tests »Re: [OOL] Torrent upload speed throttled? and i still wasn't able to see these RST packets like people on Comcast do or like what we saw in 2005 »Re: Why Is OOL Selectively Blocking Bit Torrent Pa.

I occasionally use BitTorrent's, had fairly shaky share-ratio's, and usually "stick around" to try and upload more, usually over a week or so.. not real popular stuff, mostly live music..I digress. Point, i might be only "seeder" and my peer's could be one-two folks, and upload's are not working, or are barely working.
What i have noticed is that if my peer is in Opt's net, we fly..upload's max out at the rate I set it for. Folks who are off-net for lack of a better term, or off "opt's net", i can see those reset packet's pretty good.
I have not checked to see, when uploading well, if i still see some rst packet's. I use "wireshark" for the capture's, and no, haven't really saved anything. |
