Well, way back when I was running a 6500/250 Mini-Tower and 9 it was freezing a lot with 64MB of RAM. I upgraded to 128MB and it was a different animal.
So, even if you can only get it up to 128 MB it will help so much. Of course If you get it to 512MB you can run OS X on it, pretty well.

You'll find that "pretty well", which is what I actually said is far from a glowing endorsement.
