If I subscribe to FIOS and have a new HD TV with a QUAM tuner what channels will I receive without renting an STB from Verizon. How many will be in HD? Someone told me I would receive the basic channels up to 70. However I cannot confirm this. |

To take the question a step further, I just purchased my parents a Toshiba QAM tuning HD LCD set (awaiting delivery). If I attach the non-HD STB in the traditional fashion will they be able to receive the 800 HD locals through the STB? In other words, can they receive all their Premier SD channels and HD locals through the same box? I understand they won't get the other 800 HD channels but that's ok. I can't check with my HDTV since I have only the HD-DVR's.

Options are two-fold then. QAM without the box and get local HD's and other non-encrypted channels or standard Premier package without HD channels period. As I understand, the QAM package is a separate available package. Sounds like the easiest thing is to just get the HD box and give them $120.

You could get a standard box and split the cable, one end directly to the TV and the other to the box if you don't want to spend the extra money on an HD box and just want the local HD's.

I misspoke. What I meant was the local package for $11-12 or whatever it is. By splitting the signals that would mean utilizing multiple inputs on the set which is beyond their remote utilization capacity at their age (late 70's). That is food for thought however.... Thanks to all for their input. It is greatly appreciated.
