| [Skype] Problem with outgoing sound quality on XACT Ivo Phone
I just picked up an Xact Ivo Internet Phone at Walmart and I am trying to get it to work with my Windows PC running XP. I have installed the Skype and SkypeMate 2.0 software, and everything seems to be working. However, when I try the test call, my upload/outgoing voice sounds terrible. The incoming sound is very good - cell phone quality.
I am using Verizon DSL with a 3/256 connection, and I have successfully used VOIP with this connection before. I suspect my problem is one of two things:
1) A problem with the handset causing distortion of my voice (because this is a pretty cheap phone, after all), or;
2) A problem with the call quality on the upload end.
I remember that I had to adjust this with Sunrocket by going into the gizmo and making changes. I can't find a way to do this with Skype, however.
The quality of the outgoing voice is distorted and full of feedback and all the bad things that a terrible VOIP would have. You can hear me, but I sound awful.
I can't find anything in the Skype knowledgebase on this.
Can anyone suggest how I might fix this? I have other Skype phone options, but I won't bother exchanging this phone if this is a problem that I can't fix.
Any help would be appreciated!

Can anyone suggest how I might fix this? Launch the taskmgr.exe and see how much the total CPU resources are being used while you are on Skype.
I have other Skype phone options, but I won't bother exchanging this phone if this is a problem that I can't fix. Give this a try and see if that will resolve the issue (which I doubt). If so, then you just bought a lemon. -- Mazilo always prays for FREEBIES! US Phone: +1-678-601-0907 UK Phone: +44-703-194-2574

You have about 256Kbps upload bandwidth and that itself is plenty for a single Skype call. Make sure no one else is using internet while you are testing your Skype to see if the person you talk to with Skype can hear your voice good. Otherwise, you will need to use your Skype to call other people to see if the problem persists. If so, then perhaps it is your internet connection. Do test this with your other phone to prove if this one you just bought is the culprit. -- Mazilo always prays for FREEBIES! US Phone: +1-678-601-0907 UK Phone: +44-703-194-2574

| No one else was using the internet connection when I tested the call. However, until I set up a subscription and give my cc, I can't do my own calls to test. I hate to do the subscription if the service might not work for me.
I actually don't have another phone to test with. I just meant that there were other models I could exchange for at Walmart, so I had other options if this was just a bad brand of phone for voice quality.
It looks like I might be making another trip to Walmart today. There was also a $70 cordless GE model. Would that make the sound quality better, or is it more likely to be an upload speed issue?
Thanks!

That said, if you are serious in VoIP, I strongly recommend that you try to avoid Skype which uses its proprietary protocol. Any $$$ you invested on Skype will ONLY work with Skype network by itself. As such, you won't be able to use such a service with other SIP compliant VoSP. For instance, an expensive Skype ATA and/or WiFi phone can ONLY work with Skype. With a SIP compliant ATA device, there is no such an issue. You can hop around with any SIP compliant VoSP as you wish with your SIP compliant ATA device(s), let alone most SIP compliant devices are much less expensive compared to Skype devices.

Honestly, I wouldn't know if the phone is an issue. I do have inexpensive analog phone I got for $1 from a local DollarTree store and use it with my Linksys PAP2v1 with no problems at all. -- Mazilo always prays for FREEBIES!
