So is the best way to download the new version and install over the top or uninstall the older version first? Or use the infernal updater? The website offers this counsel:
If you already have the latest or most recent avast! installed and would like to add a new language only or just upgrade to the latest version, you don't have to download the whole program again. You can just modify installed components of avast! program via Control panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast! Antivirus -> Change/Remove -> Change.

Yup what dadkins  says just use the internal updater and it will pound the new over the old with no problems.
Edit: No need to un-install and re-install anything using the internal updater. the only thing you will have to do is reboot for the installation to be complete.
