I upgraded to the latest version and it now correctly displays 192.168.1.1 in the first line.    Ping times remain the same, however; the router is not the cause of the speed problem since they persist even when the router is out of the picture entirely.]]></description>

The second is the only routing information I could find in the modem.    The time, the first line of the TRACERT does contain the address of the modem as expected.   The ping times are still horrible, as expected.   At the very top of that image you can see the last few lines of a previous tracert done with the computer connected through the linksys router.   The first line is not visible, but it contained the google address just as the previous screenshot. Typically with all routers like the linksys, you will get a response from the internal IP address, ie. 192.168.1.1, and not the external. Weird indeed. <br><br>Maybe try ordering the static ip option and see if the issue goes away. ]]></description>

Now that someone has pointed out the obvious, it DOES seem kinda strange that that isn't my gateway.<br><br>Note:  the screencap I posted is from the same configuration, through the linksys router.   Nothing changed from the >600ms trace to the 20ms trace... same machine, same setup.   This is consistent with the directly-to-modem performance.   ]]></description>

I am trying to figure out if maybe AT&T has a bad address pool in the mix. Also, do you have the static IP option?]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1523568"><b>MarcWash</b></A> : My default gateway is 192.168.1.1 (my linksys router)<br>and the IP is 192.168.1.102<br><br>Normally (and currently) I have a linksys router sharing my DSL among 4 computers.    Obviously, I disconnect it and plug one machine directly into the DSL modem before I call Bellsouth, and during the technician visit months ago.  I get the exact same results regardless of whether the Linksys router is being used.<br><br>I ran a tracert right now and got pings of ~20ms for the first hop.   I wish it would stay that way, but I know that it won't.   When I get home, I'll get the routing tables off the modem.]]></description>

The second hop showing 65.14.148.5 is in AT&T's set of network addresses per ARIN. <br><br>Looks like to me he has something wacky with routing in his router.<br><br> MarcWash <A HREF="/useremail/u/1523568"><IMG SRC="http://i.dslr.net/bb/profile.gif" ALT="See Profile" BORDER=0 WIDTH=16 HEIGHT=11></A> could you log into your DSL Modem and possibly pull up and post the routing table?? I almost think that you are getting some incorrect IP addressing from AT&T.<br><br><b>Edit: What is the ip address assigned to your computer and what is the default gateway showing on your computer? Check these first before what I asked above. Reason I am asking this is that I just took a look at someone else's traceroute in abother thread and it hit me that the first hop should be the IP of your modem if it is in router mode and not bridged. You should have something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 as the first hop. I am wondering if your DHCP pool is incorrectly configured.</b><br><br>Edit for typo in IP address]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1523568"><b>MarcWash</b></A> : Ever since fall of last year I've been having severe speed issues with my Bellsouth FastAccess Xtreme.    <br><br>&raquo;<A HREF="/linequality/nil/2383943">/linequality/nil/2383943</A><br><br>I regularly see hop times in the >500ms range for the first hop, with extremely rare instances of perfectly normal ping times.    The normal periods are short and unpredictable.  I can run a speed test with Bellsouth on the phone and it will come up perfectly normal, then I run it again and my download speed is 300kbps or LESS on a 3MB service.<br><br>I have had Bellsouth send someone out to my house.  He was here for half a day and supposedly fixed several things, but none of them had the slightest impact on my service.  When he left, there was literally nothing else that he knew how to fix.  So far I have tried three different modems and at least four computers (five counting the technician's laptop when he was here).    Despite this, I have had Bellsouth tell me that this was due to spyware on my computer.  <br><br>I am at my wit's end here.   This has been going on for half a year, and not only do I not have the slightest idea of the cause, but apparently neither does Bellsouth.  So far, all  I've got is what the problem is NOT.    A line issue in my house?  The technician got the same results when he hooked up outside.  A line issue with the underground feed coming across the street?   The technician said his measurements were perfect when he tested it.   Bad modem?  Gone through three.   <br><br>Can anyone give me suggestions on what to ask for the next time I call Bellsouth?    And what exactly IS the first hop?
