I got myself one heck of a sunburn Saturday. I am in pain, let me tell ya! In fact, I think the pain is partly why I passed out today when they took my blood. Anyone know of anything that can be put on a sunburn?
Thanks! |

| reply to signmeuptoo In addition to Kristi's suggestion, Mayo Clinic suggests Ibuprofen for the pain and swelling, cloth dampened with cool water, cool showers or baths. In place of the aloe, you might try a low dose (.5 to 1%) hydrocortisone. If it blisters, be careful not to break the blisters.
If over a large portion of the body, extremely painful, accompanied by fever or doesn't respond to home remedies, see a doctor. -- Join Team Helix * I am praying for these friends . |

| reply to sortofageek Heh, I was at the doctor's today, and asked him what I could put on it, he's a great doctor, but he told me that he couldn't suggest any creams because they would keep my pores from breathing. He's African American, but even if your black you can get sunburn, right(?), I was wondering if he didn't know more about it because of that though? I think he's the best doctor I've ever had, but I've only had two visits so far.
Thanks, sorto! It does hurt quite a bit. Roomate had me put some "zinc oxide" cream on it (diaper rash stuff) and it is stinging just a tad less, but still no fun. I think I have some hyrdocortisone cream here somewhere. I've been keeping a wet tshirt over my shoulders and chest where it hurts the most. Wish I could just drive to the store and get that aloe!
Roomate warned me I was going to get a sunburn, but I was stupid and said, "nea, not enough sun, not enough time in it", of course, I ended up being the dumbass for not listening, and now it hurts. | Aloe is probably your best bet. Also tea(strong brewed and chilled) or vinegar can also help when applied to the skin. Most important is to stay hydrated and take cook showers often as you can. -- Team Helix- Folding@Home and Rosetta@Home |

| reply to signmeuptoo Is it presenting with water blisters? If not, it's first degree and should be treated like any such thermal burn, which means removing the heat in the initial, pre-healing stages. The best way to do that is through heat sinking via clean, ice water soaked sheets/towels and/or cold water lavage or soaking. Transferring the heat this way is also instant pain relief.
Once the healing starts, use aloe gel applied 5 to 6 times a day.
Never use off the shelf creams or unguents, or, as my grandparents used to use on my burns, butter. They trap the heat and add to the damage, in addition to what your doc said about breathing.
WARNING! WAR STORY FOLLOWS! My first ever burn patient was a 9 year old girl who had pulled a deep fat fryer full of hot oil off the sink and onto her upper body and face. I learned a lot that night. We used iced sterile water applied as a lavage to sterile towels over the affected areas. The pain relief was instant and calmed her down quite a bit. |

Transferring the heat this way is also instant pain relief. I have always grabbed an ice cube when I do something stupid like grab a hot pan. I was kinda' thinking of telling him to fill the bathtub with ice and immerse himself in it. | The burn continues to do damage until the the heat is removed, by time, or by cooling the burn with water. I learned that 30 some odd years ago while doing some time with a volunteer fire department. -- I'm folding and crunching to try to help prevent stories like »Update on my son who has cancer
