Fedora 9 is out

»fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora

Edit:

I expect that access to the iso might be syrup slow for a bit. I am going to try using the new preupgrade tool:

»koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buil···ID=48882

I've not tried Fedora since version 2 was released. Maybe I'll give it another spin when the ISO downloads slow down a bit.

Thanks for the release alert.

You mean you can't ssh into your box and start now?

I'm doing the in situ upgrade over the network for a couple of reasons.

1) I wanted to test it.

2) The download set will be smaller, since only the required to upgrade stuff comes down, not the whole distribution.

3) Even if I wanted the whole thing, it's not on individual CDs anymore, only a single huge DVD. And not having a working DVD burner here kinda kills that. (Yes, I know it's possible to mount am iso image and cobble together the rest of the stuff to get it installed, but I'm lazy.)

The Fedora Unity CD spins will be out and I can grab those at my leisure.

Unless of course the over the network upgrade process delivers a smashed Fedora 8 box instead of the planned Fedora 9 box. Then I'll have to start the DVD download and get my burner act together.

I know right? I don't have external SSH turned on at home yet as I don't know if I'm secure. Another learning project I have on the list.

I am downloading it to check out now. I just finished installing 8 and configuring it on my laptop. Since I haven't really started doing anything on it yet I may go ahead and up to 9 and see how it goes. I have it 50% downloaded.

Are you downloading the DVD iso, or using preupgrade like I am?

My bad....there's no way to know that you are X% in on preupgrade, so you must be grabbing the DVD.

You using bit torrent or jigdo?

I'm 450MB along, but I don't know where the end is, and on a slow link.

I'm using a bit torrent, but I am not getting very good speeds. I probably will not have a chance to mess with it until tomorrow.

Should be pretty fast, unless you don't have a port open to share it with others. It crawls that way.

I'm downloading at 95kB/s and uploading at 100kB/s. I had some problems with packets getting dropped by one of our ISPs this morning and turned off that interface. I may have some routing issues I need to check out, but haven't heard any complaints from anyone.

Going for the 64 bit DVD install this time. This will be my first run with a 64 bit OS. I actually have a 64 bit machine now with 4GB RAM installed, so I can *almost* justify installing it.

Of course I'm seeding the 64 bit DVD only because I'm selfish like that.

Has anything major changed in Fedora 9 compared to other versions?
I mean package installer, plugins, and such.
Is it as easy as it is on ubuntu for example?
has the community grown or decreased?
I know Fedora is a great distro, I've played with ver 8 but didn't like the way certain things needed to be setup afterwards (headache)

I dunno, I'm still upgrading. There's a bug in the preupgrade package that was discovered by folks with faster links than mine. They fixed it and put a new package up, which I grabbed and installed. Then started over. I got all the way to the last step the first time when the bug struck. Thankfully the fixed package picked up where I left off. It's still chugging along.

If you want the details about what's new in Fedora 9, you can find the release notes for it and have a look.

Why is Fedora so huge? (DVD ~4GB)

When many other distro's (often live and install, same disk) and the Live Fedora fit on a CD?

Probably because the DVD contains all the source codes and extras along with the installable binary packages.

Fedora no longer comes on a set of CDs like it used to. Back then the source code and other 'extras' were on separate CDs that you didn't have to download if you didn't want them or need them. Most installs required only two, or perhaps three of the CD set, depending on what type of install or package selection you wanted.

But now being on DVD only, it's all on one disk.

If you must have less to deal with, wait for the Fedora Unity spins to come out. They offer them in a CD set (5 disks last time I looked) as well as a single DVD.

Edit: My bad. Individual CDs are back again for this release. 6 Disks, but no mention that I can find of which disks are required, and which are optional.

Also, the source code is on another set of 6 CDs, so if you want all of it, it's 12 disks total. Yikes!

Well PC can sit for the next few hours

Surprisingly I am actually getting my full 380KB/s (3.0 DSL) even on the direct DL link presently. Was like 27KB/s when I tried a couple of hours ago.

I have it installed on my laptop now. I didn't have any problems. I just do a basic install and then add the packages I want with yum later. So that is what I am doing now. Still didn't see my wireless, but I expected that. Have to go and get ndiswrapper and get that going again.

I am having problem running the Live cd. it refuses to run.
it would go thru the process but never boot. After going thru the automatic login, I thought that would be it but nutting, nada even after three hours of letting it do its thing, whatever it was.

Beats me, sorry. Try the wiki or bugzilla and see if they know about it yet or have some options for bootup you can try. All I can suggest it is verifying the iso image checksum before burning it to CD. If that's wrong, it can't work.

I tried to use the new preupgrade tool to upgrade Fedora 8 to Fedora 9. After it downloaded it almost 2GB of files, it puked on the next step.

I poked around some and learned that others had the same problem and a new preupgrade package fixed the problem. So I grabbed that and it continued on where it left off.

Then that one puked on the last step. I looked into that and saw that this problem was reported over a month ago, but the conversation died out without anyone posting a solution or even saying it was fixed.

I'm now just grabbing the six CD set and I'll upgrade with that.........maybe....if it will let me.....
