extremely high capacity speedtest

is there a java (?) speedtest, preferably in chicago, for extremely high capacity fiber testing? just got 1gbps and wanna try it out.

I was gonna post that but his connection is the same speed as that server so I didn't think it could be so good for his test.

on the .gov:

running 10s outbound test (client-to-server [C2S]) . . . . . 4.61Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server-to-client [S2C]) . . . . . . 209.82kb/s
The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 2.4 Gbps OC-48 subnet
Information [S2C]: Packet queuing detected

for some reason I get crap speeds to that (my S2C is easily over 300mbps on other places)

alright - speakeasy.net/speedtest gives me this
which isn't too accurate, but a lot better.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 142645 kbps (17830.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 8526 kbps (1065.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

its gonna be hard to max 1gbps out on a single test/server, i've tried.

whos your host? I have a server with 100mbps in chicago

i use voxel.net in new york city.
work connect.

nyc.speakeasy.net gives me up to 300000kbps before killing itself in suicidal thoughts

This is probably your best bet:

»web100.rit.edu:7123/

Its on gigabit and I never had problems getting right under 100 megs when I had a server on a 100 meg connection in chicago.

I have personally done ~400 meg to this one:

»nitro.ucsc.edu/

But this was from Socal -> Northcal so I don't know if you can get that good since you are in chicago.

Yeah that does kind of suck... Here is what I got from socal -> new york off my server on a 100 meg switch:

Client IP addresses are preserved End-to-End

Although I am also running a web100 kernel on my box which helps with higher speeds at long distances but notice that my upload is faster than my download (like yours was to the NY server). Here is what I get to nitro.ucsc.edu:

Testing network path for configuration and performance problems -- Using IPv4 address

600 meg upload, nice. As I figured this test gave you your best results (I am guessing this is the one on NY?). The download is kind of week but that could be a limitation of the server since its at a college and their downstream is probably more saturated than their upstream. When I got a 400 meg speed test it was upload and my download was like 160 meg (this was to nitro.ucsc.edu).

You might wanna try the test again at off-peak hours (if it wasn't when you ran it).

@houkouonchi:

for some reason, on speedtest.net and most other speedtests - either download and upload will be EXTREMELY high, and the other one will be significantly lower. (like speedtest.net gives me 300mbps down, 100mbps up, etc) - always one or the other. no idea why

well I don't really trust a flash applet for speeds at that level. Web100's NDT works for me easily even on 1 gigabit LAN and will give me results of 940 meg up/down. Speedtest.net has some servers and great connections but definitely not the best software setup to do speed tests. I have never gotten over 150 meg up to a speedtest.net server and my best (down) being like 520 meg and the upload was only like 20 meg to the Los Angeles server. I think the NDT ones simply are limited by what you can get to that server.

I would really suggest testing web100.rit.edu again but at like 2 or 3 in the morning if possible (off hours). I am sure they don't have a lot of excess download capacity during peak hours due to the fact its a school.

according to rit's site they have already graduated so I would think around now before they really get into summer school would be the best time for a speedtest.

1gbps is pretty cool to have for work connect. What do they give you all that bandwidth for?

I wouldn't recommend using any test that requires transport through HTTP.

One of the best tools made for randam packet generator / speed analyzer is a tool called IPERF and JPERF. IPERF is the UNIX / LINUX command line only, and JPERF is a java based gui that you can load on any windows / linux machine. You have to have a server and client on each side. It is ofcourse opensource but is the best way's of testing your speeds. Here is the link.

Well you beat my top download score by 1 megabit from work using my laptop hooked up into a gig switch:

I am amazed you could get that high of an upload though as every speedtest.net server I tested upload on gave me absolutely shitty results (Los Angeles being the shittiest, funny enough). The best upload results I got on speedtest.net was to Los vegas:

I know its not the connection either because I was able to get almost 400 megabits up to nitro.ucsc.edu.

Yeah I would agree with this as well. I use iperf over LAN but not really feasible to do in a normal situation since you would need shell access on both servers (at least to do a download and upload test). I do like the web100 NDT tests though as it works good for me.
