I want to learn how to buff a car.

I have some scratches from shopping carts and wanted to learn how to get rid of them. What do I need to buy and how should I start?

Re: I want to learn how to buff a car.

You can way too easily burn the clear coat or even worse burn the underlying paint using a powered buffer and the wrong compound which will then require a repaint. If you are not interested in doing it for a living like working in a detail shop, then I suggest letting a pro do it.

You might be amazed at how nicely you can work out scratches by hand with some polishing compound and thick nap towels.

This may help (you can probably acquire the product in a store near you): »www.autogeek.net/memigl82swfr.html

Try a clay bar.

Try a clay bar.
Clay bar doesn't remove scratches. It can pull loose paint, clearcoat and debris/dirt out of the scratches though. And if not used properly it can leave extra scratches.

quote:
1. Never use pressure on your clay bar. A soft touch is all you need for maximum results.

2. Always use enough clay bar lubricant to avoid scratching. You want the clay bar to slide, not drag.

3. Be careful not to drop the clay bar while using it to avoid picking up any solid contaminants and dirt particles that can damage your car. If you do drop it accidentally, re-mold the clay until you have a new clean surface to work with before using it again.

4. Clay bars are reusable until you can no longer get a clean surface after molding the clay into a pad.

I have been using supplies from this company for a number of years now and if you scroll down the page you will find a link of detailing tips under information resources.

FWIW Detailing is a rather simple task requiring skills that anyone with a pulse and an IQ over 50 can master.

Key tips go slow take time sweat the details and stay out of direct sunlight.

BTW their "trade secret" wax is the cats ass goes on and off easy and leaves a shine that is not matchable by any consumer product I have ever tried.
