| sbb direct is being discontinued in san jose as of 7/31/08 Today 5/13/08 I spoke to SBBD tech, as my service was kind of slow and they informed me that San Jose, California will be turned off as of July 31, 2008. The also explained to me that a letter is being sent to this affect. Other cities are going to be turned off in August, Sept and October. Has anyone else heard about this?

| Re: sbb direct is being discontinued in san jose as of 7/31/08 I received an email today that my service (Houston) will be disconnected by the end of June.
The following is an excerpt from the email:
As the result of a recent FCC action, Sprint will no longer have access to the spectrum used to operate our Sprint Broadband Direct Service in your area. Due to this FCC mandate, Sprint will discontinue your service by 6/30/2008. This discontinuance of service will also affect your EarthLink email account. Please contact EarthLink directly if you choose to continue with their service.

| I got the same e.mail this A.M. They want me to go to EV-DO wireless @ $59.95 a month.
I'm at $45.00 a month now. That's a 33% jump to stay wireless.
I'm not happy needless to say...

| Re: sbb direct is being discontinued in san jose as of 7/31/08 Found out today about them shutting down service in Fresno area. they told me letter should be sent May 30th, and service to be shut down August 31. They also said the EVDO card as a replacement, but i have a home network, and dont think the EVDO card will work with all 3 of my computers. I am going to check out unWiredbroadband. I work for Cal Fire, and all of our county fire stations have unwired and so far its been really good. Not many options when you live in the country. We dont have any cable companies out here, and I dont want to get satellite internet.

I thought the EVDO card had that 5gig bandwith restriction ?

| I received an email today that service will be discontinued in Phoenix on 7/31/08. I am a bit bummed as I have owned this IP address for a long time now. The only thing that would turn this lemon into lemonade would be if FIOS were to be offered in my area. I'd leave Sprint for that.
Other interesting thing is that in their email, Sprint offered up their EVDO mobile service as a substitute for the soon-to-be-defunct wireless broadband service...

| Boulder market as well. End of July service will be discontinued.
No replacement except for sprint EVDO 2mbs. Here, in the Denver market, we could all read the writing on the wall; crummy service, cuts in support, one tech for the denver market.
The SBBD was operated by Kite Networks, a subsidiary of MobilePro and was recently purchase by Globility. Since the acquisition by Globility, service for fixed wireless and WiFi has degraded to a point where the city of Longmont, CO was moving away from the Kite/Globility's municiple WiFi relationship.
Now, Globility abandons the fixed broadband markets without a comparable service, 5mbs/, static IP address, wireless. The sprint EVDO, mentioned in the email from SBBD recommends switching to Sprint EVDO. But reports of EVDO in this area claim the service suffers from poor download performance and lost connections.
I'm not sure what specifics of Sprint's relationship with Globility or how FCC "actions" effect Sprint's access to bandwidth, especially since the bandwidth is leased by Kite (now Globility).
I can't help feeling being "left in the lurch" by Sprint and/or Globility. Especially after the strong message of commitment to the market by Kite's management, when I called them in November of 2007.
Now, in this market, fixed wireless customers are left with a lower performance product by Sprint, or one of two other fixed wireless that are between 50% and 100% more expensive. The last alternate is comcast, who cannot even tell me how much the service will cost after the initial 6 month "special" offer price of $19.95. Also, comcast cannot tell me when they start forcing connection resets which disconnects my VPN connections to the office when working from home. I consider that hostile action towards the customer base.
So, Thank You Sprint, Globility and Kite... You should be prepared to offset the costs of truly comparable alternate solutions to your customer base. And, stop blaming the FCC for actions that your organizations could have contested and over turned. Your customers are not stupid, they may be ignorant of the FCC processes, but not everyone is.

| Yes, I got an email as well in Phoenix area with the same information. I have been with Sprint Broadband Direct / earthlink for over 8 years, and they have been the fastest service available.
If anyone else is in Tempe/Phoenix area, what will you be going to? I don't have cable and I don't trust QWest and satellite is just too slow...

| I just got my walking papers from Sprint also. Seems like they are also shutting down the Detroit area.
I called Sprint and after being transferred six times, I finely got thru to someone who told me a cable was better than EVDO, and mentioned that that is what he had at home.
What I liked about SBBD was the lack of extra taxes and fees. With EVDO you have all the taxes associated with another phone line. Why should I pay a 911 fee on my internet connection? With Comcast I have to pay a franchise fee, to allow the city to produce their left wing propaganda.
I only had problems once with SBBD and some guy drove down from Lansing, replaced all the equipment, antenna and modem, for no charge. I liked the service.
At the local Sprint Store I saw a data card plugged into a linksys router/wifi box, it looked like a nice simple solution.
With EVDO is the connection always on, or do you have to wait for it to make a connection, like the internet connection on a phone has to, (Dialing 777 ...)?

| I got a letter from Sprint BB telling me they lost their allocated spectrum during the FCC bidding. I really liked the service as it was reliable. Now I need to scramble to find an alternative that is not slower and at least as reliable. I have until 7/31 to do this. I don't think EV-DO is going to work as they have capped the traffic. I hear both good and bad about Comcast, so I am unsure how good it is in San Jose. | |

| Re: sbb direct is being discontinued in san jose as of 7/31/08 From what I understand the 3 year contract with Kite Broadband to handle Sprint BBD ends in July. Is it a mere coincidence that (Sprint) supposedly loses their spectrum at just the same time...? Mind you, this is just my opinion, but if asked I would have to say that it's my guess you are all being fed manure. Blaming the FCC is a lot easier than just telling everyone we (Sprint) don't want to play anymore, but what would I know, I only used to work there. Fun Times... | |

| Oklahoma city is going down on 7-31 as well, i live in a 2 mile IT H#!! area, cable connection is 1000 ft away and cant get it, i am 2 miles too far for DSL, found 2 local wireless providers that i MIGHT be able connect with but cost are anywhere from $50 to $150 to install and download speeds are about what i could get on SBBD on it worst days (1.5mb) for about what i have been paying SBBD for all along for, and have to pay $50 for a "public" ip!

| The Sprint EVDO 5GB cap is a real deal breaker. San Jose Sprint store was unable to confirm %GB validity but Verizon has 5GB limit and one Sprint tele suport person cofirmed the limit. If the limit is lifted with a guaranteed no limit, I would jump on it. Otherwise I am getting Comcast Blast @ 16MB dwnld. | |
