Which is more stable and reliable UNIX OS?

Hi,

Everyone seems to be posting about Linux instead of the real UNIX OSs....
Does this mean that Linux is more readily stable and reliable than Solaris (or...AIX and HP-UX)

For example, many LInux users run either Debian (which runs on Ubuntu), now, does this mean that its more secure than Solaris?

Thx.

Both are just as stable.

The reason Linux is talked about more often is cost (free). Most Unix systems are expensive commercial products. In addition to BSD variants, Solaris has entered the free Unix arena.

More people run Ubuntu, which is a variant of Debian, not the other way around as you stated, because it is easy to install and maintain. You do not have to be a Linux guru to use it. It does not mean it is more secure.

So is Solaris based on BSD or System-V?

SysV. SunOS was BSD-based.

Solaris is based is based on SunOS, which is based on System-V. Early versions of SunOS were based on BSD, SunOS 4 was the first System-V

So Solaris 10 is purely UNIX or UNIX-like?
Thanks.

Solaris can call itself UNIX.

Check these:

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix-like

No, the most stable OS' are:

1) NEXTSTEP
2) OS/2
3) Windows ME
4) BeOS

And that's the list. Don't ask us how to run BeOS under an emulator on your x8six Solaris OS and sync the time to a thumb drive Strattlium 1 server.

It has always been my opinion that MINIX is one of the most stable. Note how all of the letters used have no round edges. That makes it really stable.

Nah. Unix 1st Ed. is the most stable. AFAIK, it hasn't changed in over 30 years.

SunOS 4 was the last BSD based SunOS. I know since I used SunOS 4.1.4 up until Y2K.

SunOS 5 was the first System-V SunOS.

I would add AuspexOS from Auspex Systems to round out the top 5 list.
