Do you need to worry about polarity with Dryloop DSL?
Last year we switched from Bellsouth DSL to Comcast, but now to save money, we are going back to (Bellsouth) AT&T Naked DSL.
I want to run a new CAT5 Cable from the Phone box to the DSL modem location (and not run DSL over the existing house wiring - I am going to backfeed our VOIP phone into the house wiring like our Current Comcast Digital voice is now)
Since we won't have dial tone, do I need to worry about polarity when I connect the CAT5 cable at the phone NID box?
Currently where the overhead phone line comes into the BOX (NID) there are only two copper leads attached to a screw terminal block and I'm not sure which lead is which (This is an older house and the incoming line only has two leads).
I can probably take the screw terminal apart and see which lead was attached to which house wire if necessary, but my question is: does it matter?
Also I am planning on reusing my Westel DSL modem fom Bellsouth, but I read somewhere that you should use the Phone line that came with the modem, rather than a "regular" phone line (Straight through Vs. Crossed ?). Again does it matter?
I'm fairly certain that I used a standard phone line when we originally had Bellsouth DSL service, so with the Westell, does it matter which type of phone line is used? I have no Idea where the original line that came with the modem is.

Hook it up with reference to that and that's all you need worry about. Polarity is irrelevent on modern 1FR and it's voip equivilant. |

No, polarity is not an issue w/ DSL, remember it's a data signal, has nothing to do w/ voice.
You will have dial tone present on the line, it's provisioned for 911 access only. If you are planning on using VOIP to backfeed to rest of house you'll need to rewire 1 access point for the DSL modem from the CAT5 your running, back to the primary pair that feeds access to the jacks in your home, either from an RJ in that area or from the cat 5 itself.
As far as the Westell, once you've run/wired your CAT 5, check for DT, then just plug in, hard reset from the back and run your new install disk, you may be getting a new gateway anyway w/ the kit, but once setup if you do go w/ the Westi make sure to do a firmware upgrade since it hasn't been used in a while.

When Comcast installed last year, they simply snipped both incoming leads at the screw block in the NID. I'm just going to tie in there and NOT reconnect the incoming Bellsouth line to the house wiring - just to the new CAT 5 line - that way I don't have to worry about filters any where on the house wiring because the two will be totally separate. |

| Canezoid, I have a question about FastAccess DSL Direct and 911 calls.
I'm aware that it has a dial-tone but I thought it was only for the voltage to keep the copper in good shape. I was under the impression that "naked" DSL could have a sealing current applied to it without a dial-tone, but I did not give it anymore thought because I assumed that putting a dial-tone on the line was probably just easier for AT&T Southeast to do.
I told a few of my customers that calls could not be made from the line even though it had a dial-tone and they asked if they could make a 911 call from it and I said that I did not think so.
Can a person make a call to 911 on a FastAccess DSL Direct line?
If this can be done then I will need to contact my customers and inform them that I was mistaken about this. |

dry pair dsl has no functionality at all you cannot dial out on it (even to 911) or dial in,the only thing you can do with it is identify the number using the anac numbers that is it. Yes it is similar to a quick serve but much more restricted. |
