Just wondering, are there places that you go use that supply you Exchange Services and features? Why purchase Exchange Server when you can go to an outside vender if possible? |

| reply to GlazedHam There is a sister company we just purchased that goes through intermedia.net
They do exchange hosting and they do a good job at it. It is exchange just done over the web and with the outlook client running in Cached mode, it works great. There are some really nice advantages. You don't have to worry about backup and recovery. Email archiving is done on their end. Best of all, you don't need the licensing or the disk space or the server for that matter. Spam and virus filtering is also done on their end.
Disadvantage is that for a large company, you need the bandwidth to support the mail. If someone sends a 5 meg attachment to 10 people in your organization, and you only have a single T1, you are going to have some bandwidth concerns. Unlike if you have an exchange server in house, if you get a email like that, there is one copy that is kept on exchange (downloads once) and then it goes to everyone's inbox as a pointer.
You also have cost in there which varies.
Lastly, you can't install any custom applications. This might be a make or break if you have something that needs to run with your mail on exchange.
For a small company, exchange hosting is awesome. For a larger company, it may not be worthwhile. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

| reply to GlazedHam I would hate it if our exchange was hosted some place else. I have all the backups here and I can change a configuration quickly if needed. It would drive me nuts if I had to call someone up and get them to work through a problem. As it is now I can jump on the exchange box and change a configuration if needed, sniff all the traffic when there is a problem, black list or white list in a matter of seconds, and know what snooping admins may be looking through company emails. Exchange is not that hard or expensive to bother paying someone else a lot of money to mess it up. -- don't get 2 close 2 my fantasy |
