 [TWC] TWC Blocking Certain Sites?

Hello.

I'm a sys-admin for a bunch of website forums and have been getting a lot of complaints from TWC customers that they are unable to access our sites. We've been able to determine that only certain home users (not corporate or business accounts) are affected.

The sites in question are:

Users are able to do traceroutes, ping, and lookup the proper DNS. However, they are not able to actually connect to port 80 on the box to fetch content.

Even accessing port 81 doesn't work either.

There is no firewall, and our ISP has confirmed no filtering is in place. The rest of the public can access the site just fine.

I'm at a loss as to what else we can do to diagnose the problem. Does anyone know of a contact at TWC that can help us?

Thanks.

I can connect fine here in Port Clinton, Ohio (NEO). It is however slow and not that fast, it may be your end tho.

A specific user who is unable to connect has the email address @twncny.rr.com. So I assume they are in New York?

Can any new yorkers see these websites?

The users can trace to you.

Have you been able to trace back to the users with problems?

I'm in Rochester and had no trouble accessing the site. The twccny address is for areas around Syracuse.

Im assuming the trace stops at hop 17 because of a firewall.

Re: [TWC] TWC Blocking Certain Sites?

Thanks everyone for the help!

The fact that the site works for you means that its most likely a local issue with the users configuration.

Does anyone know if there is parental software that is installed that TWC/RR uses that could be causing this?

There is parental control software the RR makes available for download and install. It is called puresight parental control.

I have it installed at home and can try those sights later tonight.

When a site is blocked by puresight (at least the version I have), it is obvious by the message that it was blocked.

bcrosby

@verticalscope.com
Thats what I figured.. there would be at least a message saying that it was blocked.

If you don't mind trying it when you get home, that will be awesome.

I tested both sites with Puresight on it's most restrictive setting and both worked just fine.

Doesn't look like a parental control setting is doing it, unless they have something other than what TW provides.

Are you(they) using RR automatic DNS addresses?

If so,(have them) try one of the publicly available ones like 4.2.2.2 and see what happens.

A while back, I was having lots of "this site doesn't exist" type problems, I changed my DNS addresses and the problem is gone.

I have no problems getting to either site.

1 person does not constitute an issue.

Please IM me all the IP's that can not connect to your sites.

Thank you
