[TWC] Cleveland Ohio area - application connectivity issues

I hope this is the right place to mention this - I have not yet posted on these forums before.

I'm a TWC customer, have been for a long time. No real big issues.

I'm a World of Warcraft fan. I play it fairly often - have never had issues connecting.

Yesterday I tried connecting and immediately upon connection I noticed severe lag. I couldn't do a thing in the game, then was disconnected.

I thought this must be a Blizzard issue - but when I went to the tech forums of WoW, I noticed that many others, specifically in NE ohio, were experiencing the same thing.

Now I'm thinking it's an ISP issue.

I ran tracert to various IPs associated with WoW game servers and found timeouts on neo.rr nodes such as:

Then for work I tried to connect to a work PC via VNC (remote desktop program) and I found I couldn't.

I had always been able to, but now I can't.

I always connect to that machine by IP - and here is the tracert result for it:

In any case, I have contacted TWC several times about this and I think the problem lies on their end.

I strongly feel it's an ISP issue, again, because of the sheer quantity of people just in NE ohio on the WoW threads that are reporting this same issue.

Can anybody provide any input on this - what might be causing it, what might be a solution?

I have a tech from TWC coming tomorrow and I'd like to give them the most useful information!

Addendum:

SOME have said that modifying their DNS server has fixed the problem, but others say that doesn't really help much.

Again, this problem is affecting VNC, WoW, and from the forums I'm reading, people are having difficulty with some Yahoo functionality and VPN systems. They are all exhibiting problems.

This all just started happening yesterday.

can't get on Steam's friend list or vac-secured servers. Here are a few threads about it in the steam forums:

Same here in Mentor on The Lake, I had a service guy out last week, he checked all lines, then installed new line from house to the pole. All went well and speed was about 9 meg down, and about 700kb up. All my connections were fine until yesterday. Suddenly my speed dropped to about a dialup, and I got timed out on several sites that I visit regularly.

What was worse is I worked on my webpage for hours, and each time I try to connect to my website, I get a connection but times out trying to get into my folders. SO I cant even use the FTP for 2 days now. And today my speed dropped at 3 pm EST again as you can see by the attached copy. This really sucks as I'm paying for the Turbo and have called them numerous times only to be put on hold for 30 minutes at a time. Its really getting agrivating when you pay for the Platinum service, and get garbage for service.

Anyone know whats going on? Why can we connect to some sites and get timed out on others? Everything was working perfectly until yesterday at about the same time 3 pm. Then about 11 pm it magically goes up to speed again but still no FTP connecion to my webpages folders.

Whats going on? All my settings are fine, my signals are right on the money, and my modem (Surfboard) Is brand new. I've owned Motorola modems for 3 years now previously with Adelphia.

It is also effecting access to Steam. Friends list isn't working and VAC can't be contacted so you get booted from any Steam game (TF2, CS, etc) within minutes of joining.

also my newshosting account is acting up now... going from 500k/sec (normally 1.5mb with my turbo) to 0 and back to 500 every few seconds...

Called time warner, they are at least acknowledging there is a problem with world of warcraft, but had no clue about Steam, or VNC/SSH

I too have the exact same issues and when I did my troubleshooting came to the same conclusion. Our ISP (Road Runner) has done something. I have been noticing severe lag on servers for a little more than a month or so now. Yesterday I couldn't connect to Steam Friends server and could not make a connection to Valve's anti cheat servers and got removed from the games within 5 minutes of playing on any server. I have made no changes on this end in any way, but proceeded to research what was up as if I had.

I contacted road runner and got some script reading support person. After some very trying moments of my patience I got one thing out of this guy well two actually.
1) he doesn't know what is going on.
2)He read out of the manual that "RoadRunner does not block ports". He wasn't technically savy enough to go over my research with me and I ran out of time and gave up.

Now I find this.

I find this troubling considering the battering ISP's are getting for supposed controls on pier to pier streams and putting bandwidth caps on their customers. Is this just a coincidence? I think not, but maybe. They may be trying something and some tech forgot to open those ports when they activated it. Not beyond the realm of possibility. The fact that my upload and download streams started to always be interrupted a while back tipped me off.

Hopefully all the forums I have been on and the ones I am now aware of through this forum will be noticed by the right people and something will be done. I am doing all I can on my part and I recommend that everyone that reads this do too. The more squeaky wheels show up the faster the response will be from them.

Update: I keep a dialup for a backup for those times when Time Warner goes down, which often happens here. I logged in with my Dialup, and I was able to access all my sites, and I was also able to use the FTP to my website to upload webpage material. Of course all this was at horribly slow speed but it was just a test to see who's at fault. I can tell you straight up Time Warner is doing something and it isnt good.

I cannot FTP or connect to certain sites with the Cable, yet on the dialup I can do everything just fine.

You tell me who's at fault today, and we're paying big bucks for this so called Turbo service.

Call them up and let them know you're pissed off, I just did.

Latest Speakeasy test... Last Result:
Download Speed: 170 kbps (21.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 296 kbps (37 KB/sec transfer rate)

if you use a dialup as a backup try it you'll see..

What happens if you lower your MaxMTU to 1300 or 1100? Do any of the problems go away?

Try using DrTCP to do it:

Don't mind me, I'm just trying to help...

Aquilae

@rr.com

How can I find out what my current MTU setting is?

My concern is if I change this and want to go back, what do I go back to? I'm not familiar with this application (DrTCP)

And to the rest of you that are talking about Steam, SSH, FullTiltPoker, all that - this sucks.

I have a tech coming out tomorrow - what can I tell him?

I'm pretty sure the problem that you are having is a local service issue that we are all experiencing and not something limited to you. I don't think a tech would be able to do anything because it's a problem that everyone is experiencing. The only thing we can do is get TWC on the phone and make them fix it.

Aquilae

@rr.com
I know, that's what I think - I told them that on the phone I said getting a tech out here wont solve the problem. If it were only me, maybe it could, but this is being reported by many around the area.

The MTU setting is 1500 and you shouldnt change it unless you know what youre doing. You can adjust the Rwin number , mine is set at 65720 and that works well when the cable is running at top speed I've seen 12 gb downstream on that setting.

As far as the tech, tell him to put his meter on your line and check your signals.. I had a tech here last week and he suggested putting a new line from the house to the pole which he did. My old line up there had to be almost 30 years old. But if your cable has been working ok I seriously doubt that you have a line problem unless you have squirrels that have been chewing on the wires or you got a loose connector up on the pole like I had and when it rains water gets into it.

I talked with Time Warner this afternoon, they say they were aware of the problem for 2 days and are working on the servers. Im not sure what they are doing, it could have something to do with the P2P file sharing. I support P2P sharing, and feel you have a right to share files over the internet providing youre within the boundary of the laws.

Adjusting your DNS isnt going to make this problem go away or run any faster. At about 11 pm, the cable speed will magically kick back in and speeds will be back up until tomorrow again I'll bet....

Aquilae

@rr.com

Yeah, unfortunately I don't know anything about MTU or Rwin so I'd rather not mess with it because I don't want to compromise my connection further.

This is really inconvenient - I hope something is done very soon about this.

Just wondering, what are other excellent ISPs that have solid service in the Solon - Cleveland Area?
