[General] Reverse Lookup for VOIP Possible?

Hi,

I'm having a problem with a scammer who is abusing and would like to locate his actual country to file a report.

I have two questions...

1. Is there somewhere to enter a VOIP phone number to get a "reverse lookup" to the actual landline or mobile number it forwards to. Or, at least the country code?

2. Is there somewhere to enter a VOIP phone number to determine which VOIP company the number belongs to (e.g., GotVMail, etc)?

Thanks in advance.

there are no online resources for the general public to get you the requested information. your local law enforcement has access to everything and will be helpful if you have actually had a loss. if you are receiving calls on a traditional Bell line, your Bell company will have a security department which can pursue that for you, as well.

No. One of the things about VoIP in general is that it's going to be very hard to track down who is actually providing the service to the end user. Typically there are several chains of "resellers" in the equation.

As an example, the number could be a Level3 number, but it could be a customer of ViaTalk, VOIPo, Vonage, Voicestick, etc. There's really no way to easily determine that just with the way the VoIP industry handled number assignment.

To add to the mess, there are plenty of VoIP accounts created with stolen identities - so even if you manage to figure out who the VoIP provider is there is very little chance you'll actually get a real name out of this.

Now, regarding stopping credit card fraud against VoIP providers, like Bruce says - no one seems to care.
