Cablevision Starts Building Wireless WIFI Network?

According to a poster in CableRant.com, Cablevision has already started putting up their wireless broadband network, that they announced last week during their 1st quarter 2008 financial report. The wireless network should take about two years to complete and cost about $100 per customer to build. According to the poster they are testing two types of wireless access points.
1. BelAir 100S Strand Mounted Wireless Multi-service Node
2. Cisco Aironet 1500 Series mesh access point

They even got some pictures of them being installed.

I wonder how soon until it is live.
Even though it is a slow 1.5mb, it will be nice to be able to get online everywhere in the Cablevision footprint.

Re: Cablevision Building Wireless Broadband Network?

I started to pick up a hotspot in Levittown on Hempstead Tpk. between Gardiners ave and Hamlet rd
(Waldbaums shopping center). I can connect to it, get an ip but can't get online or access »optimumwifi.com
There happens to be Verizon Building real close..LOL.

I'll have to check it out by the Star Bucks over there.
Now I won't have to pay for Star Bucks internet.
I think this is a pretty good feature they are adding.

Click here for Map of that spot.
Thats also right down the road from Cablevision's Headquarters and the Hicksville Head End. That doesn't sound like a coincidence.

Thanks. It nice though to see signs that they are already building it. Companies will sometimes announce things and then it never happens.

Not bad for a wireless connection.
I'll have to test it later myself.

What is your card reporting, is it a B, G or N network?

On the computer end it is G Built into a Toshiba laptop running XP tweaked. I normally get 20/3 at home connected to my router with Boost service. When connection to optimumwifi it is showing a G/54Mbps connection.

Massapequa Park is now active. I was able to get internet access with my PDA all along Sunrise Hwy and Park Blvd. What I did notice is the signal seems to be very directional - I could barely get a signal in Kohl's parking lot but received reliable service all along Sunrise Hwy. They appear to be using channels 1 & 6.

The big test...try to receive streaming internet radio while in my vehicle!!

Out of curiosity, what sort of range do these appear to be getting?

It does seem directional in a strange way. At point A I get a good signal, assigned an IP but cannot get online, At point B all works great. As you can see these two spots are close to each other.

Levittown Hot Spot

Edit: I picked up the signal for the first time on Market Ln. Behind point A with one bar, acquired IP but couldn't connect.

What I am wondering is if this is going to be a limited deployment in each town or will they over the course of the next two years make it so that I can connect from anywhere that they cover? Not just select places that they choose in each city/town that they offer service?

I know they have it in my town, but it's only available to like portions of two roads near the shopping areas... I wonder if they will expand it all over the place?

The article indicated it would be complete coverage.

This network is being built using our existing infrastructure overlaying a wireless mesh network. When completed, any Optimum Online customer will essentially have service anytime, anywhere within our footprint at speeds up to 1.5 megabits, using any of their portable devices which are WiFi enabled.

By the looks of the antenna on the BelAir model, it looks like it is very directional.

I was in the same area and stopped by the Star Bucks there.
I tried my laptop and I was able to connect with two bars.
I got about 1.5mbs download.
Not bad at all.
Once they complete the whole network, it should be pretty cool.

That isn't bad at all for a wireless connection.

So does anyone know how they plan to deploy this? Are they working on some kind of schedule? Long Island first, then NJ? CT? etc.?
