| [crt/lcd] Video is acting screwy
I can't really pinpoint the issue here. I recently built a computer.

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32
I think that's all that I can link to that's relevant.
The monitor I am using is a Samsung SyncMaster 940MW. I can't see to find diddly squat on this monitor online. Anyways it's been working for me before just fine. The old computer I had was running an ATI All-In-Wonder x1900 and I never had problems. And I ran XP MCE and Vista Ultimate on that machine so I doubt it's an OS issue.
The problem I am encountering occurs when I switch between video connections with the remote control on the TV. Basically if I stay too long on one connection it will not let me return to the DVI connection (which is for my computer). For example: I am watching TV so I switch over to the TV connection. After an hour I decide to switch back to my DVI connection but everything is blacked out. I get flickers which last less than a second every so often which show that the computer is still on but I can't get do anything in that time obviously. I attempt to switch back and forth between connections but to no avail. I turn off the LCD TV monitor but nothing happens. Eventually I am stuck with having to turn the computer off, usually I can just press the power button and it will shutdown safely, but sometimes I may have to do a cold shutdown because the computer wont automatically shutdown (possibly an application that isn't closely).
Other times I may start up the computer fresh, and after it passes the boot screen with the green bar which has Microsoft, the screen blacks out again. I never get to see the green aurora that says Welcome when Vista is starting up.
This morning the worst happened in regards to this ongoing problem. I was playing Playstation 3 on my Component connection. I lasted an hr or two. My computer was on the entire time. When I finish playing I can't get video. So I try to go the TV connection and the other connections on the LCD TV and they all work fine except the DVI. I keep messing around with the remote control hoping there's a way to fix this without having to restart each time. I attempted to press the Auto-Adjust button, and that didn't work. I kept going at it. Next thing you know the screen splits up into three sections horizontally. Which affected all connections which were on. I saw a tiny bit of the TV connection on the first top section. The second middle section had white static which seemed frozen. I don't know where that came from. The third bottom section was the biggest and was just a black area. I'm not sure what to make of this. I had to restart unfortunately and things went back to normal.
I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers for the video card I have in this computer (unless they updated them since Sunday). I also downloaded the drivers for my monitor from driversguide.com because to Samsung apparently this monitor doesn't even exist (or maybe I'm horrible at searching through their site).
This is a really annoying problem and I don't know what's going on with the video. Not sure whether it's the LCD TV or the video card. |

| The driver is on their website: »www.samsung.com/us/function/sear···rd=940MW
It could be several different things. First, if Vista is like XP, their are power saving features which shut down after a specified amount of time. So it could be shutting off the display and not waking properly (you would need to provide mouse of keyboard input). Second, ensure that you have your desktop resolution set to the native resolution of the monitor (1440x900@60hz). If you are using a different resolution or refresh rate, you could be having sync issues when switching back and forth. Aside from that, you could be having hardware issues with the TV or video card. -- Google is your Friend |

| Thanks. How did you go about searching? I looked around and couldn't find it for the life of me. It seems to be the same exact driver that I downloaded earlier though.
So I checked the display settings, they are all at native resolution at the proper refresh rate you stated.
So I checked the power saving features. The screenshot of the settings are below. Seems its set to have a 20minute wait before the monitor goes to sleep. However I see "adaptive display" turned on. I don't know what that is. I mean I read what it says when I have my mouse over the option but I'm not sure if that setting would cause this to happen or not.

| reply to mike31mets "Adaptive Display" just means that it will learn your habits an adjust the shutdown time accordingly. You can read more about the power settings here: »www.thegline.com/windows/2006/12···s-6.html
For the sake of troubleshooting, I would set everything to always on. Don't have anything power off. That will help eliminate your settings and/or the OS as the cause of the issue. -- Google is your Friend |
