 [Xtreme] CRC errors

Is it normal to have over 23000 CRC errors?

It depends on how long you have been counting them.

That many over a day or less would get my attention and I'd start looking for answers.

That many over a week or more wouldn't concern me.

Reboot your modem to zero the counter and have a look in an hour or so, then later in the day. If they are really going up fast, you probably have some sort of line problem.

Can it be the modem?

I guess that's possible, and easy enough to check.

Can you take it to a friend who has DSL and test it there?

Or if you have a spare modem that counts these, try that one on your line for a while.

Ha ha, check this out (observed during a thunderstorm on 5/8/08, Netopia modem, DSL 3558/384)

1st screenshot is at 3:41PM with 32,703 CRC errors.

2nd shot is 12 minutes later, CRC errors have just passed 100,000.

3rd shot is 4:53 PM, with 284,260 CRC errors.

And that S/N ratio display! Gives some insight into the mind of whoever programmed that stats page...
(If -4.50dB is bad, "-4.-50" must be *even worse*.
