| reply to Quake110 Re: Who uses their ISP's portal anyway...
said by Quake110 :There's nothing wrong with being a "dumb pipe", on the contrary, the customers will enjoy the extra "dumb pipe" service. As I mentioned to the other poster, while people who visit this site would certainly like a "dumb pipe" we are the minority. The overwhelming majority of users want/need ISP portals to navigate the web. Keep in mind that there are still literally millions of AOL users today, and those that recently switched dont feel comfortable using an "open" internet connection. These people tend to use the ISP portals as a homepage because it gives them all the information they need in one place. With many ISP portals including a Yahoo or Google search bar on the main page, their customers really dont need to go anyplace else.
Dont get me wrong, a dumb pipe would be great for me and many of the people I know. The reality however is that unless you find a really small "niche" ISP you arent going to get one. There is too much money, and too much demand for ISP's to provide ancillary services for this type of thing to ever go away. Frankly, this type of thing will only become more popular as time goes on so get used to it! -- I urge you to beware the temptation of pride -- the temptation of blithely declaring yourselves above it all and label both sides equally at fault, to ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire Still True Today; RR
