Phonecall from Shaw checking my modem...?

Hi, my family recently got a call from Shaw customer service, telling us that they would need to do some tests on my modem. I didn't pick up the phone and with them not understanding what they were told, they passed off the synopsis to me as being

"something about the upstream/downstream in my area and there is a dry spell in speed and that they would need to schedule an appointment to run some tests." I think they mentioned something about more upstream than downstream or the other way around. I actually do notice that internet is slowing down in my area, sometimes streaming videos will buffer quickly, sometimes it doesn't buffer after about 10 seconds. I do use a router that I did put a password on, but there are just so many wireless devices that my friends/family use that they don't want to hassle with passwords, so we eventually turned it off.

I use my computer frequently and use moderate amounts of bandwith, but never reached my cap, I don't even think I ever came close.

I own my own modem if that means anything and I actually do use the standby button every time I am finished with using the internet (downloading, online game, general surfing,e-mail etc). I guess its been paranoia since my friend said he was hacked before and now has become a habit.

Now I have to be home for them to come in and run unverified "tests" and I don't know whether it is something that they are actually doing or am I at fault and in trouble for something, downloading perhaps?

if anyone has been in this situation before, i'd appreciate it, if you could tell me what's going on.

I should also mention I live in the Lower Mainland, BC

That sounds odd to me... i would call Shaw and double check.
they can see your modem signal from their office, and they can test the signal from outside your home. Unless you called and asked for a service call?

They may be trying to identify the source of some noise in the return path that they traced to be coming from your house.
