If Vista is like XP, any HDD's not in use can be set to power off. It is in the power options in Control (for XP).

Bronx, NY		 No CD in the IDE optical drive. It's definitely the HDD spinning down. I checked the power settings and it was set to turn off the harddrive after 20 minutes which sounds about how often this was ocurring. Thanks, that will hopefully solve it.
