what happened to the mix tape?

sure i wasnt anywhere near college age in the 80s when the mix tape was big but i knew they existed. im thinking today with devices like the iPod there must be an easy way to mimic the mix tape and not leave the same trail as P2P. and i doubt campus police setup stings to stop physical mix media swapping.
