can pci x16 2.0 gfx card work in a 1.0 slot?

i need to upgrade my x700pro pci-e x16 card
9 i know it an old card 2gen i think) for a newer one so i can play ETQW..( that card cant play it worth , well you know).. im lookin into a gf 9 series card but they all 2.0 pci-e x16..

physicly i know theil fit in the slot, but im concerned about the performance issues. my sys board is a 1.0 x16.. a dg965wh intel...

You will have no problem using a PCI-e 1.0 slot with a 2.0 card. There completely backward compatible, you will however get the slower 1.0 speeds on the bus rate.

BTW: Unless your getting the 9800GTX I would stay clear of the 9 series I have heard it's just a shy better than the 8 series. Go for a 8800GT or GTX & you will be VERY happy.

i heard the same thing about the 9's were rebadged 8's... i cant afford the 9800 too much money.. i was thinkin of a 8800 for a reasonable price.. i was lookin into either one of these...

Consider getting something other than reference cooling

Something like this is great.

with a Zalman fan and pretty cheap. It's quieter and cooler than reference.
