I hope this is followed by some more HD love soon after.

Thanks for the news!

Lose 3 analogs and gain 6 HDs....oh wait...maybe 9 if they compress the hell out of them.

Wow CN8 moving to digital, that surprises me.

Hopefully Comcast in other regions (HINT: Central PA), take this example and utilize it to get the bandwidth required for future HD services.

That is news to me also, nothing I have heard about for SCPA area. I do know there are 4 more HD Channels on the way, with about 2 - 4 more late summer / Fall time frame.

Cypher what does are bwidth look like for these additional 3-8 HD Ch. ????

I have not heard of any Analog moves for Lebanon or Harrisburg.

Two open frequencies on EIA 87 and 88 in Reading. Anything else is going to either 1) Require analogs moving to digital 2) Reorg the current QAM's to include more 3:1 (Like the Discovery HD Theater, Animal Planet, History mux or HBO, MAX, TLC mux from Comcast Media Center), or 3) Do some band edge testing and look at the reliability of putting a carrier on EIA 119, 120 or beyond.

NFL Network sits by itself on 116 here. HBO HD is mixed with a bunch of SD Channels. MAX HD is also muxed with a bunch of SD Channels. Reorganizing the current bandplan to move some stuff into 3:1 would be beneficial and completely possible. They should start doing this now while they have 2 open QAM frequencies that can be used for temporary moves.

I believe that these CT systems have very limited bandwidth, some are still 550 MHz. That is probably why they are moving these channels to digital.

I am on the Hartford system and we are 750 Mhz. Confirmed this with the DPUC.

Some of Connecticut is 750 Mhz, while other parts are 650 Mhz.

I don't believe there are any 550 Mhz systems.

By Connecticut state law, cable companies are required to file any information reguarding channel additions, deletions, moves, name changes as well as price increases with the DPUC (Dept. of Public Utility Control) within 30 days of their effective date. Of course, they don;t always get posted on the site in a timely manner, wether that is because of late filings, or the DPUC being slow, we don't know. The DPUC has their databases online.

This is the Cable Tariffs page:

Cypher - it is coming eventually, but after the "challenges" that occurred with the last Analog migration, they are going to be more careful.

This is VERY interesting to say the least. Good info.

I wish they would do that with Springfield, due to we are still mirroring the Analog channels in the Digital Tiers.

Last I checked, which was months ago, the Branford and Clinton systems were 550Mhz. They may have been upgraded, but by and far, the CT systems are no higher than 650Mhz with only a couple 750Mhz systems.

Anyway, my point is that most systems need the bandwidth to add more HD. My friends systems is lacking many HD channels that we have in Boston. Although Boston has a huge advantage in being an 860Mhz system.

i guess that's a problem. Here there were public hearings about them removing tvguide, msnbc, and game show from analog on some systems. People demanded money back and for the local franchise to be changed from comcast. The franchise authority told them that west virginia has a law whereby there aren't any exclusive franchises anymore and comcast promised to lower rates but guess what they raised them instead. So I could see where changing channels to digital can be very tedious and troublesome.

Just curious, as I am in the Branford system, what does it take to upgrade a 550Mhz system?

you will see trucks going around replacing bad line, replacing amps and eventually the headend will have alot of things replaced to upgrade it to 750,860 or 1ghz. When we were upgraded to 750 back in 2000 they had trucks going around checking lines and spliced and replacing amps on the poles. They had "contractor from att" on the side of them. I'd assume they will say "contractor for comcast" on the side now. Also you will get a note on the door saying something to the effect of "pardon the inconvience, your service may be shut off in the afternoons for the next couple weeks so we can upgrade our system to serve you better in the future." It should give a number for you to call for information on where crews are working this week.

Cable Services LLC. Did the upgrade for our system back in 98-99. They also have been around working on Service Electric cablevision. I know they tore up the streets in the underground devisions and put in new cable, new pedestals, new taps, and must be new actives because theres new 'vented' peds.
