BAT file to automate the techreadout entry into the DMT tool

d_l : deblin 's DMT tool is a very useful diagnostic, but saving the techreadout files from a Speedstream modem or a Motorola 2210 modem repeatedly when tracking an interference problem through time can be a nuisance. Also there can be a bit of a delay with the several set-up steps required to manually run the DMT tool when you are trying to capture an "instantaneous" snapshot of a transient line problem. The curlgrab_dmt BAT file can automatically query your modem for the techreadout file, run the DMT tool, and then archive both the techreadout file that was used and the plotted DMT results page with a time stamp. The batch file uses commands available in WinXP, Win2000 and Vista. It will not run properly under a Win9x operating system. Anyone using still those can still use the DMT tool manually.

The BAT file needs the curl binary, a 270 KB-sized file, to do the heavy lifting of querying the modem for the techreadout file and then uploading it to the DMT tool. Various compiled curl binaries can be found here: »curl.haxx.se/download.html. The Windows 2000/WinXP generic 7.18.0 binary without SSL isn't the latest version, but it works perfectly for this use and is smaller in size than the newer versions: »curl.haxx.se/download/curl-7.18.···sspi.zip .

1) Download the zipped file and unzip it to a curl folder that you make. The unzipping process will make a sub-folder containing various extra files within your curl folder. Copy the curl binary from the sub-folder to your main curl folder. At this point you can delete the sub-folder and all its contents if you wish as only the curl binary is needed.

2) Download and unzip the curlgrab_dmt ZIP file to your curl folder.

3) Run the curlgrab_dmt batch file. The first time it is run it will ask you if you want to send your techreadouts to DSLReports anonymously or as a registered user. If you want the latter option, you must enter your DSLReports user ID and password to be remembered by cookies in curlgrab_dmt. There is no simple way to obscure the entry of your password in a BAT file program so if password security is important to you, then don't allow anyone to look over you shoulder during the entry. Immediately after entering your password, the screen will be cleared. Your ID and password are then stored in Netscape cookie format which also is a standard for other browsers. If you ever wish to change the program back to anonymous or to be a registered user, delete the dslr_cookies.txt file in your curl folder and re-run curlgrab_dmt.

This section is to be implemented once the newest DMT tool beta is moved to DSLReports.

4) Also the first time you run curlgrab_dmt, it will make two sub-folders in your curl directory, plot_archive and techreadout_archive, where time-stamped copies of your files are archived.

5) On the first run, the batch program will check your network for one of the default modem IPs. If you have changed your modem IP to a non-standard IP, it will ask you for the new IP to use. At this time the batch program and the DMT tool only works with the two types of modems, the Speedstream 5100b/4100/4100b-series and the Motorola 2210. Each time curlgrab_dmt successfully accesses a modem, that IP will be retained in the IP.txt file in your curl folder as the program's default IP for the next run of the batch file.

6) If you want ready access to the curlgrab_dmt batch file, you can right-click on the program in the folder and send a shortcut copy to your desktop. This desktop shortcut can then give you a DMT plot of your current line conditions in 10-15 seconds.

[att=1]
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

curlgrab_dmt···beta.zip 1,472 bytes

So the DMT graph will looks "weird", as it will be missing all the upstream bits. This is normal.

I also included some additional enhancements to detect cases where the DSL is not in sync, rather than try to graph bogus data. It will also warn if the uploaded file is not a valid Techreadout file.

For now, the updated DMT tool is not yet available here on DSL Reports, as I wanted to properly beta test it before releasing it to DSLR.

So if you'd like to beta test it, please point to it here:

http://pflog.net/cgi-bin/dmt.pl

Please post your results here (screen shot) and more importantly, if you have any problems with it, let me know so I can fix it.

Thanks!
--
»hillaryis404.org/
