| a reset and reconfigure wont work. A 169. IP if you are hardwired is pointing to a NIC problem. An uninstall/reinstall of the NIC may clear this. Go to my computer; right click on it and select properties; then click on hardware; then device manager; then look for network adapters, click on the plus sign beside it; locate your NIC; right click and uninstall; then when it has gone, click on action and "Scan system for hardware changes"; when it is back in the list, go back to your cmd prompt; type Ipconfig to see if you are getting a 192 Ip address.....if so you should be good to access the modem and configure it.
If you are getting that from a wireless connection, it is letting you know you have an incorrect WEP key. Look at the bottom of the modem for the WEP if you haven't changed it from the default, re-enter this in your wireless tool and reconnect, if the 169 disappears, you know you have entered the correct WEP. |

Can't access the modem, modem doesn't give valid IP for any connection, all valid frontline troubleshooting completed.. All signs point to reset/reconfigure modem. |

jim This suggests the modem is working just fine, I would investigate the computer more. -- reboot, reset, reconfigure, then recycle. |

| 169. is microsoft default. It did that to me when I had a bad NIC card. I had to go out and buy a new NIC card to get it working again then winded up where I am today with onboard NIC.
Since its most likely not the NIC on the laptop or the PCIMIA card for the wireless(if any), best advice is getting a new modem like through ebay for dirt cheap as it seems like the modem got damaged when the DSL came back on.

Modem does not seem to be fried by the service reactivation -- earlier post indicates it works in safe mode.
Also, the ability of a second system to connect online without issues ("my toughbook got back online wireless and hardwired") strongly points to this being something specific within the Inspiron laptop.
Now for the $64K question: what was changed on the Inspiron between the last time you successfully connected before DSL went down? |

But because of that, it's likely spyware or something that's affecting connectivity. In which case more indepth troubleshooting would be needed. |

| But the part I can't understand is.. Why does Verizon have the DSL Dialer still around if they advise all customers to use the connection as always on?
If it happened recently, do a system restore to about 2-3 weeks ago and that should fix the problem. |

| reply to ajb62787 A lot of times the dialers are still around from when they were actually needed. People could go without years for issues using them, so they'd never change. I was one of them. I'd used a dialer on multiple machines drawing multiple IPs for years until Verizon got around to enforcing things. It wasn't until then that I found out I could set everything in the modem. |
