Dim screen on laptop

When I first got this laptop the screen used to dim down when the laptop ran on batteries and then get bright when I plugged the laptop in. There was an option to keep the screen bright with the laptop running on batteries but I cant find it and even when it's plugged in the laptop is dim.

It's an Acer Aspire 5630.

either the inverter or backlight (or both, possibly) have failed. Has there ever, or is there now, a reddish tint to the screen? If so, its definitely a backlight. If not, it could be either. usually its just the inverter though.

There is no redish tint on the screen. It's just dim.

Is that inverter hard to replace.

My laptop used the function keys to lighten and darken the screen. You should look on the laptop itself, or in the manual for the way to brighten it before you can confirm hardware failure.

I read about that on a forum talking about holding down the function key and pressing f7 and f8 but it doesn't work.

I just found the right f keys for it and all they do is turn off the screen...

According to the manual it should be Fn and the "+" key.

The brightness level might be too low. Press + (increase) to adjust the brightness level.

Actually it looks like it may be the FN + the arrow to the right key....

They actually have a logo on them for brightness. I don't know how I didn't see that until now

Don't feel bad, many of my personal computer problems turn out to be the "nut behind the keyboard" too. I'm glad to have been able to help.
