| Yes, I can explain the project since I am a part of it in that Steve Gibson uses his regular News Group readers to help with projects like this. I've been following this project from the beginning and giving feedback to what I am seeing when testing my browsers and giving suggestions (one was adopted) as to how to make everything clearer to folks who will be testing their browsers once this goes live.
The project is nearing completion and I think it best to wait for it to go live before discussing it more fully. Anyone truly interested can read all the posts for the last several months on this at grc.news.feedback. I will say this project will likely become a classic on the internet much like Shields Up. In general, this cookie awareness project is intended to help everyone (including the browser writers) understand in depth how the various browsers handle cookies and how the various behaviors affect privacy, and whether or not the browsers actually behave as the user sets them to behave in regards to cookies. There have been some major eye openers in this regard and what was reported in the OP's post in this thread is the latest "eye opener" but picking out one post and making it the subject of a thread here I feel makes for confusion as that post needs to be taken in context to the entire project. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | said by Jean_22 :are thre still many people using it? Using IE 6? Sure, I still use it as do many who use XP but IE has not been my primary browser since about 2001. You better hope folks who have IE as default are using IE6 or IE8 as the cookie leakage in IE7 is horrendous as was discovered during this project. I'm glad I didn't like IE7beta and reverted back to IE6 long ago on my host machine. I use IE8 on one virtual machine. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to Mele20 It is surprising that some people who are seemingly very concerned with insuring their privacy and protecting themselves from various forms of 'spyware' fail to understand, and even ridicule, the potential invasive characteristics of cookie placement & tracking and browser leakage.
said by Jean_22 :are thre still many people using it [IE6]? Many people, myself included, still use IE6 when necessary. I extremely minimize any use of IE and will not install IE7 on XP for numerous reasons, including the issues coming to light in this thread. Firefox is my choice for both XP and Linux. Additionally, Proxomitron usage in XP and Linux further mitigates some leakage issues. |
