| [DW7000] Hughesnet speeds
I have been having problems with my speeds. I get the typical response that during peak hours the speeds will drop. I can live with that and understand it completely. It just seems like something fishy is going on. They tell me that peak hours are 5pm to 2am EST. Right at 5pm, my speeds consistently go down to 90kps down and 33kps up. At 2am, my speeds go back up to normal. I have the 1mb package. This just seems way to coincidenal to me. Any ideas? Tech support is absolutely no help at all and say this is just the way it is. | | slaver

Before and after what? Beginning around April 10th I changed my usage patterns to conform to what Hughes considers to be an economical user. After two weeks, my throttle was lifted, and after another two weeks I went from light throttling to no throttle at all. I now have my best speeds ever on the same sat/gateway as before.

| Thats fine, but I need to sleep at night and work all day, only way I got onto what was going on was when son came home from college and alerted me as to what was going on. I only use the connection from like 7 pm to 11.30 pm each day. -- HN 7000S Pro Plus 74 west, 1130 | | MMS747

| reply to MMS747 how do i change my usage patterns to conform to a economical user? does that mean not using internet between 5pm and 12midnight? or just cutting down on the amount of use? | | MMS747

| See: www.dslreports.com/forum/r18365429-Hughesnet-and-Us, specifically the post by Arion about 3/4 of the way down the page.
In my case, after four months, it finally dawned on me I was being throttled, and I wondered what I was doing to get flagged. Next, I wondered what would happen if I changed my usage patterns. I didn't change any of the activities I was doing before. (By the way, none of these included P2P such as BitTorrent.) All that I changed was the quantity (bandwidth used) of the activities, and their hours. I still stream video (using a low to moderate bit rate which I have done since long before the "4-12 thing" started). Specifically, I watch news programs using RealPlayer and Windows Media Player at 150? (Real) to 350? (WMP) optional rates. And I still use YouTube. I still do normal surfing at any hour of the day, peak or off peak. For downloading and streaming, I try to avoid the 4-12 peak, but occasionally dip into it. I have reduced the frequency and quantity of use of the FAP FREE hours. So a typical "heavy" usage day might include surfing as much as I want when I want, streaming video for an hour or so, and maybe using the FAP FREE zone to download as much as 100MB. (If I had a higher service plan, I would adjust accordingly.) | | MMS747
@direcpc.com | Bear in mind that this is just my own little experiment as far as "conforming" goes. It could all end tomorrow. But it is the longest sustained period of moderate to no throttling I have had since New Year's. | |
