| Advice On Purchasing An Extended PC Warranty
About a month ago, I purchased a computer on sale from Dell which came with a one-year warranty.
Yesterday, Dell sent me an offer to extend the warranty until 2012 for $195, about 40% of what I paid for the computer on sale.
On the surface this looks to be a good deal, but I've never had any direct experience with Dell's warranty group, and with the prices of computers falling monthly, I'm not sure whether this additional insurance is worth it.
As far as the computer is concerned, I can easily see keeping it until the extended warranty expiration date.
Would appreciate everyone's input and service experiences that you might have had with Dell. |

| In a desktop..I wouldn't extend it, but that's just me
If you're comfortable with replacing a PSU or the odd here & there of Ram, USB port or otherwise - and can reformat/wipe a drive/install a fresh OS.. then there's no real need.
Desktop computers provide ample room for negotiating changes should they occur. Parts are somewhat proprietary with Dell, and they do become obsolete...but can be found easily enough
In respect to their warranty dept, I haven't had any issue once I got thru to the right folks. (That in itself was a great feat, however). My daughters XPS she got from her grandparents had a few warranty issues and they were for the most part well served. -- ~Safe Hex~ Team Discovery ~ Project Hope ~ Like A Hurricane~ |

| reply to Digibits I bought a PC for a graduation gift and took the three year extension on the warranty. I figured that was enough to cover my niece through college and it was easier than doing tech support on a college kids PC. With the school program that I purchased it under I also got next day delivery on any replacement parts. The extended warranty was actually a freebie because it was rebated back to us.
In that 4 years the only part that failed was the CPU fan, which Dell replaced and actually got it here the next day.
I wouldn't pay for the extended warranty. -- Team Discovery |

| reply to Digibits I'll have to agree with the majority, don't purchase an extended warranty, they just don't seem to be worth the hefty extra-expense you pay. I think most manufactures must give a one year warranty and if you purchase a decent brand chances are you won't encounter any problems that don't show up fairly early on.
I should also mention the only computer that I haven't built was a Dell 9150 for my daughter that's been problem free since it's purchase, oh at least two years ago. -- Team Discovery Team Helix |
